Year 5 Update

📰 Year 5 Newsletter – Term 2, Weeks 10 & 11
Hello Year 5 families!
We’ve had a busy and exciting couple of weeks of learning across all areas of the curriculum. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to:
✍️ English
This fortnight students put their persuasive powers to the test as they worked in teams to deliver their structured debates. With strong arguments and clever rebuttals, they’ve proven they’re ready to take on any topic—perhaps even at the dinner table!
➗ Mathematics – Time
In Maths, we have been exploring the topic of Time. We have been learning how to:
- Read and represent time on an analogue and digital clock.
- Calculate and compare durations using real-life timetables.
- Convert between units and time to solve problems.
Our activities have included, manipulating analogue clocks, playing games which require students to express the same time in different ways and reading timetables.
There are a range of interactive sites students ca access to develop their skils.

🧠 SEL – Puberty and Emotional Changes
In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), students have continued exploring the physical and emotional changes that occur during puberty. With a mix of curiosity and maturity (and just a few nervous giggles), they examined a range of products and resources designed to support them through this important stage. It was wonderful to see students approach the topic with such openness and respect.
🌏 Humanities – Our Impact on the Environment
In Inquiry, we have been continuing to learn about how humans impact the environment—both positively and negatively. We explored topics like:
- Pollution and climate change
- Recycling and renewable energy
- Deforestation and reforestation
We also looked at World Environment Day and researched sustainable initiatives that help protect our planet. Students created posters and shared ideas on how we can all make a difference.
🧥 Reminders
Students have received key information about the upcoming school production, including a copy of the song they’ll be performing. Please support them by encouraging regular practice at home. We look forward to celebrating their efforts with all our Year 5 families in Term 3!
- It’s getting chilly outside, but warm inside! Please make sure all clothing is clearly labelled with your child’s name so that any lost items can be returned quickly.
