Hello Kingswood Community,
During the start and middle of term 3, the garden takes on a slower rhythm. The cold winter soil means not much new planting can begin just yet, but that hasn’t stopped our students from getting involved and enjoying the space.
One of the highlights has been turning over the garden beds, with plenty of chatter and laughter as the hens curiously wander at their feet, hoping to catch a worm or two. The hen house always needs attention and students have rolled up their sleeves to help with sweeping and scrubbing out the water containers. I’m also pleased to share that our hen with the sore leg is recovering well and her bandage will be off by the end of the month.
Harvesting continues to bring joy. The Year 4s delighted in picking the perfect oranges from our beautiful tree, taking time to choose carefully and appreciate the rewards of the season. In our garden beds, we currently have pak choy, green and red cabbages, silverbeet and peas growing steadily.
It’s been wonderful to give students a little freedom in the garden; time to be curious, follow their interests and work mindfully in small groups. These moments of engagement, whether digging giant holes just to see how far they can go, or squealing with laughter as they unearth worms to feed the hens, show the magic of the SAKG program in action. This term, students have especially shown the Habit of Mind “Responding with Wonderment and Awe” as they explore the garden with curiosity and joy. What a lovely way for them to begin their week.
Don’t forget you can see more of our adventures, including videos of the students and our hens, on our new Enrichment website: https://sites.google.com/kingswoodps.com.au/kingswoods-enrichment-program/home
Happy Gardening!
