Wakakirri

What a fabulous year it has been for Wakakirri!

Term 1: We began the year by forming our creative team, which met regularly to brainstorm ideas and clarify our intentions. Once our story was established, we created a music collaboration, began choreographing, and conducted auditions. Our amazing creative team, who continued their leadership and choreography roles right through to the end, included our Dance Captains, Lily Woods and Emma Wilson-Doidge, Year 11 students Hailey Krongold and Harper Trezise, and Year 10 students Nyssa JohnsonCamryn SmallLucaya Stent, and Charlotte Liemant.

Term 2 Weekly rehearsals were in full swing, with our enthusiastic team of Year 7–12 dancers learning all the choreography. Costumes were researched, ordered, created, and adjusted to perfection.

Term 3 Our first performance took place at the Frankston Arts Centre on August 12, alongside many primary schools, a dance school, and another secondary school. Later that week, our opposition performed at the Clocktower Theatre in Box Hill, where several other secondary schools also vied for a place in the National Finals. ✨ We won! Our students were successful in securing a place in the National Finals. 👏👏👏🎉

Our second performance was held at the Frankston Arts Centre on September 8, where our students once again shone on stage. The day was filled with rehearsals, make-up and hair styling, and plenty of camaraderie, culminating in an even more polished performance.

A special mention goes to our Year 7 students India and Tayah, who volunteered, rehearsed, and were filmed providing the commentary that will (hopefully!) be used during the televised announcement of the National Winners in October.

This group of students has shown remarkable resilience, growth mindset, and adaptability. Despite multiple withdrawals due to injury (including one student who was sadly hospitalised the weekend before the finals), the team regrouped, adjusted choreography and placements, and never let setbacks dampen their spirits. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and teamwork.

I special shout out and thanks to Indi’s mum for all her help with costumes and on the two performance days, and to Nyssa’s dad for producing our amazing set piece, and Ms Johnson for producing our projection and t shirts.

Now, we wait patiently for the results to be released on October 15… Who will be the National Winner for 2025?

We look forward to creating another Wakakirri production in 2027!
