ART

Our Year 5/6 artists have been working very hard over many weeks to create some fabulous bird sculptures. Each student was asked to choose a native Australian bird to recreate in papier mache form. This was a very complex piece with many steps. The students needed to first create the base for their bird out of recycled and found materials. They use old newspapers, wire, pieces of cardboard and plastic from old milk bottles to cut and tape into the shape of their birds. They needed to problem solve how their birds were going to stand and how they would recreate complex shapes such as the neck for the swans. When they were happy with their bird forms, they applied layers of coloured tissue paper using papier mache techniques. In order to get the colours just right they referred to many different images of their chosen birds. Then to get them to stand, they used pieces of recycled timber from a fallen tree as a solid base and attached each bird using either wire for feet or wooden dowel for their legs. The finished birds are fantastic, and all our Year 5/6 artists should be extremely proud of their efforts and dedication to this unit of work! Well done.
