New Beginnings: Year 7s Embrace Secondary School

Settling In, Finding Their Feet, and Looking Ahead

As Term 2 draws to a close, the Year 7 cohort at Doncaster Secondary College has made commendable progress in adapting to their new learning environment. With a blend of anticipation, nervousness, and excitement, our newest students have begun to establish themselves as valued members of the school community.

Transitioning to Secondary School

The shift from primary to secondary school presents students with a unique mix of challenges and opportunities. For many, one of the biggest adjustments has been learning to manage new routines, navigate a larger campus, and gain independence.

Shin Chan (7E) described the transition as “exciting yet nerve-wracking,” highlighting the challenge of getting used to lockers and the new school setting. Atticus Martin (7E) found the change “interesting,” especially as he adapted to the expectations and systems of secondary school life, such as using lockers — a key symbol of growing independence.

Despite the initial nerves, students expressed a generally positive outlook. Nathan Biggs (7C) described Term 1 as “good,” and noted similarities with his experience in Year 6. Atticus added that it was “not bad,” and Shin summed it up as “alright,” acknowledging the ongoing adjustment to a more structured and demanding academic setting.

Highlights from Year 7 Camp

One of the standout moments of Term 1 was the Year 7 Camp, which gave students the chance to bond, build friendships, and develop team spirit outside the classroom.

Nathan described the camp as “fun” and “enjoyable,” while Shin particularly enjoyed activities like laser tag and mountain hiking. Atticus reflected on the camp as being similar to a Year 5 experience, with familiar activities and a comforting environment, but still meaningful and fun.

School Life and Student Moments

Beyond camp, Year 7 students participated in a range of school activities. Interschool sports stood out for Atticus, who valued the teamwork and energy these events offered. Meanwhile, Shin shared a relatable moment — one of his favourite parts of the day is hearing the bell ring at the end of classes.

These little moments and shared experiences have helped our Year 7s ease into high school life with humour, resilience, and positivity.

Looking Ahead to Term 3

As we prepare for Term 3, it is clear that the Year 7 students have laid strong foundations. With new friendships forming, routines settling in, and a growing sense of confidence, the cohort is well on its way to thriving at Doncaster Secondary College.

We look forward to seeing what they will achieve next, both in the classroom and beyond.
