Year 5, Term 2:April Newsletter - 2025

Welcome to Term 2!

Literacy

We have begun our Term 4 Knowledge by learning about the significance of ANZAC day. This week, we have started our next topic: Protecting Earth’s Resources. This unit explores the natural and human-made resources people use to survive. Our goal is to develop a greater understanding of these resources and how we as a society can protect them. We will learn about water, sir and land resources including how they are being polluted and what is being done to conserve them. Towards the end of the semester we will look into our Health Unit.

In Writing this term, we will be identifying the structure and features of a persuasive text. Students will plan, draft, edit and publish a persuasive text based on our knowledge unit Protecting Earth’s Resources.

Maths

We started Term 2 by looking into money and rounding values into the nearest dollar and 5c. Numeracy will become a large topic for Grade 5 as we look into 2x2 multiplication as well as long and short division.

In other numeracy sessions we will start delving into statistics and measurement, including identifying the area and perimeter of irregular shapes, rectangles and triangles. We will also look into stats, graphs and chance problems through sessions and Daily Review.

AUSLAN

In Auslan this term, we will be learning about signing the size of items, different shapes and the picnic lunch food signs.

SEL

In SEL, The Resilience Project will continue to be used to build on our social and emotional wellbeing. Students will explore different ways that they can share their worries and different strategies for help-seeking. We will learn about the catastrophe scale and identify how big or small a problem may be.
