Welcome back to Term 2! We hope you had a restful holiday break. It’s been wonderful to see the students settle back into school life. In this newsletter, you’ll find a glimpse of the fantastic learning so far and the exciting activities planned for the rest of the term.
This term in Writing, students are focusing on writing complex sentences. Students have been identifying the elements of dependent clauses such as, subject, verb and subordinating conjunctions. Students will then use this knowledge to write a range of complex sentences. Looking ahead students will use these strong writing skills to write a cohesive and organised paragraph using the ‘single paragraph outline’ structure. In other exciting news, students now have the opportunity to work towards gaining their pen license. Students are practising their handwriting each day, focusing on: spacing, sizing, formation and placement. Once they earn their pen license they will be rewarded with their pens and their own licence that they need to keep with them at all times.
We have hit the ground running by starting the term with some lessons on the importance of Anzac Day and remembering those who have fought, and died, for our country. The students collaborated to create a wreath and read books, participated in discussions and designed their own Anzac Ted’s.
We have also started our Health Unit! The students have just begun learning about the respiratory system, including what happens to our breathing and heart rate when you exercise. In the coming weeks, the students will be learning about the organs in the respiratory system, and how this system works with the circulatory system to keep our bodies functioning.
This term in Numeracy we have been learning all about addition and subtraction strategies such as vertical addition involving renaming, inverse operations and using the bar model to solve all of our unknown sums! Students have also started measuring and comparing length, using formal units to develop a strong understanding of size and distance. Over the coming weeks, we will also explore mass, capacity, and temperature, giving students hands-on experience with practical tools and real-world applications. In our Statistics unit, students are learning to create different types of graphs, interpret data, and evaluate the effectiveness of various data displays. These units encourage critical thinking and problem-solving, and we look forward to seeing their confidence grow as they apply their skills in meaningful ways.
During our Resilience Project lesson this week students learnt about strategies to calm a busy mind. They participated in a meditation, a body scan, that helps you to focus on one particular part of your body at a time, narrowing your thoughts, stilling your mind and drawing attention to anything your bodies may be feeling like pain, tension or stress. It’s great for relaxing and feeling more connected to our body and emotions.
In Auslan this week students have learnt signs for common vegetables that can be used in soup.
