Year 1, Term 2: April Newsletter - 2025

Welcome back to Term 2! We hope you had a restful holiday break. It’s been wonderful to see the students settle back into school life. In this newsletter, you’ll find a glimpse of the fantastic learning so far and the exciting activities planned for the rest of the term.

Literacy

In Phonics, students continue with the Little Learners Love Literacy program. They’ve started Stage 6, learning the digraphs 'sh', 'ch', and 'tch'. We’ll continue with Stage 6 and move into Stage 7.1, expanding their knowledge of complex sounds.

In Writing, students are building strong sentence skills by using adjectives, identifying complete sentences, and understanding statements and questions. They will practice editing for punctuation and spelling, and explore the difference between fact and opinion. Students will also be introduced to information reports, learning how to plan, write, edit, and publish their work. Throughout the term, they will expand sentences with details and use correct punctuation, including exclamation marks.

Knowledge

This term, students will explore two exciting units. In Geography, Continents, Countries, and Maps, they will learn about continents, oceans, and map types. Later, in our Health unit, Human Body Systems, students will investigate how the body moves and explore key systems, including the skeletal, muscular, respiratory, circulatory, and nervous systems.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students are building their number skills! They’re exploring place value, using ten frames, bundling ones into tens, and partitioning two-digit numbers. They will practice skip counting by 5s and 10s, recognize number patterns to 120, and use base ten blocks to compare and order numbers.Students will also learn to sequence events by time (days, weeks, months) and describe durations. They’re collecting and interpreting data with tally marks and picture graphs, identifying categories, and comparing popular choices.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)

In SEL last week, we learned about ANZAC Day. We explored the importance of remembering those who served and sacrificed for our country. We discussed the meaning behind special symbols like poppies and memorials, and how we can show respect during ANZAC ceremonies. The students showed great empathy and understanding as we reflected on this important part of our history. For the rest of the term we will be continuing to use The Resilience Project to build our social and emotional learning.

Auslan

In Auslan this week, students have been learning signs for a picnic lunch. They enjoyed practising signs for foods and sharing what they might bring to a picnic with friends.
