The Arts, Term 2: April Newsletter - 2025

Welcome back to Term 2! We’re so excited to dive into another creative and colourful term in the Visual Arts room. Our students are already off to a fantastic start, with plenty of hands-on projects that explore new techniques, artists, and cultural stories. Here's a sneak peek at what each year level is up to:

🖌 Foundation – Discovering Indigenous Art & The Rainbow Serpent

Our Foundation students are beginning a magical journey into Indigenous cultures by exploring the story of The Rainbow Serpent. Through this powerful Dreamtime story, students are learning about colour, line, shape, and are getting hands-on by weaving with wool around natural sticks—either garden sticks or balsa wood—to create beautiful sculptural artworks inspired by the natural world.

🎨 Year 1 – A Pop of Colour with Howard Arkley

Year 1 students are diving into the bold, vibrant world of Australian artist Howard Arkley. Known for his bright depictions of suburban life, Arkley’s work is sparking creativity and colour exploration in the art room. Students are experimenting with patterns, outlines, and vivid hues to create their own modern masterpieces.

🖼 Year 2 – Printmaking with Collographs

This term, our Year 2 artists are becoming printmakers! They’re exploring collographs, a textured form of printmaking where students build up layers of materials to create printing plates. This tactile process allows them to experiment with composition, texture, and design, all while learning about the magic of prints.

🍩 Year 3 & 4 – Sweet Sculptures with Paper Mâché

It’s a delicious term for Year 3 and 4 as they explore the techniques of paper mâché! Students are creating sculptural donuts and ice-creams, using form, texture, and vibrant colour to bring their tasty creations to life. It’s messy, fun, and a great way to develop three-dimensional art skills.

🧼 Year 5 & 6 – Plasticine Sculpture Challenge

Our senior artists are focusing on sculpture using plasticine as their main medium. Through this unit, they are refining their modelling techniques, experimenting with texture and form, and using their imagination to create detailed miniature worlds and characters.

We’re looking forward to a term full of imagination, exploration, and artistic growth. Don’t forget to ask your child about what they’re creating each week—you might just have a little artist in the making!
