Year 6, Term 2: April Newsletter - 2025

Welcome to Term 2!

We are so excited for all the amazing things we have planned for this term.

Literacy

So far in Year 6, we have been learning about ANZAC Day and its significance to Australian and New Zealand history. We explored the origins of ANZAC Day, learning about the soldiers who bravely fought during World War I, especially at Gallipoli. Through videos, stories, and class discussions, we gained a deeper understanding of what life was like for the ANZAC soldiers — the harsh conditions they endured, the courage they showed, and the strong mateship that developed among them on the battlefield.

We also focused on the meaning of the ANZAC spirit, which includes qualities such as bravery, perseverance, courage, and sacrifice. These values helped the soldiers through incredibly tough times, and they continue to inspire people today. We talked about how the ANZAC spirit is not only something from the past, but a part of our national identity that we can carry forward in our own lives — by showing kindness, standing up for what’s right, and supporting others.

In Writing, we explored the power of poetry to express emotions and ideas about war and remembrance. We wrote Cinquain and Quatrain poems to describe the experiences of soldiers and the importance of remembering them. We also read the famous poem In Flanders Fields and unpacked its meaning. It helped us understand the sorrow and hope felt during war, and reminded us why it's so important to continue honouring those who served and sacrificed.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been working hard to build our skills in solving multiplication and division problems. We have been practising different strategies to solve problems both with and without regrouping, helping us become more confident and accurate. Using a range of methods, such as the standard algorithm and mental math strategies, we are learning to choose the most efficient way to solve problems depending on the numbers involved.
