Library Awards
After a 12-month hiatus, continuing with a popular tradition, our Library Awards system where students are rewarded when they have borrowed three times in a row (by placing their name into our Library Awards box), has been reinstated this year. Drawing for the weekly ‘lucky dip’ prize winners now takes place on Wednesday’s and is results are announced during the day by our Year 6 students when our other weekly announcements are made.
If a child’s name is drawn, Library Awards certificates will be received, together with a book of the student’s choice selected from a collection set aside for this purpose in the library.
Congratulations to the winners of our two drawings so far this year, details as follows:
· Noah H 0JG – ‘Iron Man: Colouring Book & Activity Pack’
· Tilly M 2SE – ‘The Unicorns of Blossom Wood’
· Lily W 0JG – ‘Pokemon: Psyduck Ducks Out’
· Lily R 5LH – ‘Hearts & Crafts: Squad Goals’
· Evie H 5LH – ‘Spirit Animals: Book 1- Wild Born’
· Imogen R 2NW – ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender – Aang’s Unfreezing Day’
· Liana C 1MT – ‘Magpie Learns a Lesson’
We look forward to having lots more entries in our Library Awards box and completing many more award drawings throughout the year!
Simultaneous Storytime:
This year’s National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is scheduled for Wednesday 21st May. This is an annual event co-ordinated by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) and they are aiming to break records this year by uniting millions of readers across the country to enjoy ‘The Truck Cat’ at 12 noon across Australia.
Our school is registered to participate in this event – and whilst we might not read the book at exactly 12 noon, all classes throughout the school are encouraged to
read it as close to this time as is practicable. ALIA also provide links to activities that classes may also complete on this day.
The Truck Cat is a heart warming story about cats and humans, immigration and identity, and homes lost and found. With illustrations by multi-award-winning artist Danny Snell and words by acclaimed new writer Deborah Frenkel, The Truck Cat is the perfect book to inspire kindness and compassion in young children everywhere.
Scholastic Book Club
Issue 3 brochures were distributed next week. Closing date for orders will be Friday 9th May. Families who place an order this issue will receive a $5 promo code to spend on Issue 4.
Scholastic also run a National Family Reading Month challenge during May titled ‘Read Every Day? Read More In May’. Details are included on the back page of the Book Club brochure, together with a QR code for more details.
Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge:
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Bimbadeen is excited to be taking part once again!
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 and aims to help young readers develop a lifelong love of reading.
It is not a competition; it is a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 5th September 2025.
Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.
Since it began in 2005, more than 4.5 million young readers have taken part and together read more than 63 million books!
This year, the Challenge is celebrating its 20th anniversary with the theme ‘20 years of Words and Wonder’ and a year of special activities. Follow the link for more details https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge, or follow Victorian Premiers Reading Challenge on Facebook. There you can read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklist, enter books into your child’s reading record and find more information about the VPRC.
All students will be sent home details about their registration next week and a message regarding this will be sent via Sentral.
If you’d like to know anything further about the Challenge, our school’s Challenge coordinator, Tracey Johansen will be happy to answer any questions.
Happy reading!
Parent Helpers
Would you like to help us in our library?
Thursday afternoons, 2.30pm – 3:30pm, has been set aside as a time for
parents/grandparents/friends etc., to assist with the many tasks in our library including book processing, covering and shelving.
If you’d like any further information regarding this, feel free to contact me at any stage, either directly at school or via Sentral message.
We ask that you sign in at the office to register your attendance and have a WWCC which has been registered with the school. Upon arrival the office staff will let me know you have arrived so you can be directed to where I am, as often we complete book processing tasks in the BER.
We’d love to see you!
Till next time, happy reading everyone!!
