Education Week is an annual celebration of public education across Victoria. In 2025, it will be held from Monday 19 May to Friday 23 May.
This year's theme, Celebration of Cultures, highlights the rich diversity within our community and the broader world, and recognises the importance of every child feeling safe, valued, and welcome at school.
Throughout the week, students at Ceres Primary will be exploring culture in a range of engaging ways:
· Specialist subjects will be tailored to cultural celebrations, including Italian Carnevale-inspired Art and Dance lessons.
· Morning Circle sessions will feature cultural explorations and opportunities for students to experience different languages.
· Integrated literacy sessions will see each class focus on a continent and explore some of the cultures and stories connected to that part of the world. We look forward to celebrating the unique and vibrant cultures that enrich our school community!
Earlier this week, our teachers ventured out to Moolap Primary School and Leopold Primary School to observe teachers during the English Block. These schools draw on programs such as Phonics Plus and SMART Spelling and it was a great chance to see them in action in a different context, as these are programs we have adopted at Ceres.
We noticed the schools were very calm, organised and had clearly established routines and expectations with their students. In observing this practice, we were then able to reflect on what we saw and draw on elements that affirmed our current practice. It also gave us the chance to consider incorporating new ways of creating teaching and learning opportunities for our students.
We are in a transitional time in the development of our whole school approach to teaching the English Curriculum. Visits such as these enable us to reflect on our practice and form the best model for our context, based on evidence-based practices and our own action research.
