Year 1 News

Look what’s been happening in Year 1!

Advent

Year 1 students have been learning about the season of Advent,

the start of the Christian year. The word Advent comes from the Latin 'adventus,' which means 'coming' or 'arrival' to signify the birth of Jesus. Advent is a time for celebration; anticipating Christ's birth and looking forward to when Jesus will come again.

Here are some new learnings that INR have shared about the season of Advent:

Advent is a time of waiting - Abigail M.

The colour of advent is purple- Bella T.

The advent wreath is the shape of a circle - Marley

There are four candles that you light each week before Christmas - Adrian

The four candles represent joy, love, peace and hope. - Davina

The white candle, the Christ candle, is lit on Christmas day. - Abigail R.

On Christmas we celebrate that Jesus was born - Leeson

In Germany the children check their shoes before they put them on as a special person visits them and puts sweets in their shoes! - Zachary

My tradition is different to Christians. We do special stuff but we have no candles. We cook a lot. - Isabella L.

In Year 1 Inquiry, students have been using the STEM skills (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and following the engineering design process to solve a problem in fairy tales.

They had to…

ASK

  • What is the problem?
  • What are the limitations?

IMAGINE

  • Think of ways to solve the problem.
  • Choose the one they think will work the best.

PLAN

  • Draw a picture.
  • Think of the materials they will need.

CREATE

  • Make their design.

IMPROVE

  • What worked? What didn’t?
  • Change their design to make it better.
