Year in Review

In January 2023 the gates opened to the bright-eyed year 7 students, and so began their secondary school journey at Bairnsdale Secondary College. From day one, our students have taken everything in their stride and grown as individuals (and definitely in height too).

From the classroom shuffles as we gained access to the new year 7 wing, to navigating their way across such a large campus, our year 7 students were an exemplary illustration of our school values. The Swimming Carnival proved the highlight of the term, with many students participating, and making their way through to represent the College at Division and Region levels. As our students all settled in seamlessly and began forming new friendships across the year level, the year was off to a fantastic start.

Term 2 saw students meeting new teachers and broaching new subjects, with the Hub thoroughly enjoying the yummy creations from the Food Tech classes. The students tackled new content in all core subjects, studying the world around them in Science, learning about Australian History and the ever fearful (but surprisingly fun) introduction to Algebra. Yet again the year 7 cohort took this all in their stride and their confidence within the College flourished.

The year 7 Hub space became a hive of activity at break times with the introduction of the table tennis table; the ongoing commentary offered from the coordinator’s office providing additional enjoyment and laughs.

In second semester our year 7 students embraced the many opportunities and challenges offered to them across the curriculum.  Routines strengthened and friendships deepened.  The pathway connecting the year 7 Hub to the wider school campus, which runs past the wetland, (affectionately known as ‘The Swamp’) became firmly etched into the student psyche and timetables became second nature.

Our students experienced a challenging winter camp at ‘The Summit’ in Traralgon and many of them undertook outdoor activities which required team effort and supporting one another to achieve a goal. Both staff and students were fortunate to spend valuable time together building trust, confidence and respectful relationships.

As the year progressed our students became increasingly familiar with regular CATs (Common Assessment Tasks), charging of laptops the night before school, submission and completion of set tasks and keeping up with the daily school routine. They shared school sport days, snacked on fresh fruit from Lisa’s desk, created ‘mockumentaries’, stunning artwork and sanded and joined timber trays in woodwork.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the year 7 Hub enjoyed visits from Charlie and Elvis (our school Wellbeing dogs). Our students matured and reflected on their personal growth and their many achievements were worthy of celebration.

As the year moves rapidly towards Headstart and our students transition into year 8 our very best wishes go with them into the future.  We wish you all a safe and happy holiday break and look forward to following the year 7 journey as our students progress into the year 8 Hub.
