At Monday's assembly the Foundation students shared their ‘Word Webbs’. Created using morphology. One was the word play. Why is play spelt with an ‘ay’ and not ‘ai’, because it is on the end of a word. Another word was paint. Why is paint spelt with an ‘ai’ and not ‘ay’, because it isn’t at the end of the word. If only I was taught this way! To each of these words they added prefixes and suffixes. They made play into, played, playing, replay, etc. Absolutely fabulous for the children to share what they had done, and they did so with great confidence! I had a sneak peak at their results today, and on average the class comes out above level! What a fabulous start to their education.

Star Students

Foundation: Oliver, for writing a detailed narrative called “The Cat at the Top”.

Nearly to the end of the year, if you are nearing a milestone remember to read every night so you can reach the target. Certificates were awarded to the following students on Monday:

Book Recommendation

Tom J recommended the book “Oddballs” by James Rallison and Ethan Banville. Tom describes it as a graphic novel full of adventure and comedy. It is set in the town ‘Dirt’. There are a number of characters in the story including, James, Max, Echo, Sellers, Stuart, Mr Mofly, Mum and Dad. In the five brand new stories James grows sentient bacteria in his mouth, sells his yard, turns the whole town into ASMR zombies, enrages several birthday girls and even faces his own impending death. And of course, he learns nothing. Tom recommends this book for students in year 4 and up and rates it 6 out of 5 stars! It must be good!

Foundation visits the Charlton Museum

Foundation have been learning all about Charlton in their Humanities classes. Last week they visited Carolyn at the Charlton Golden Grains Museum. Thanks to Mrs Zagame for organising the trip and to Carolyn for donating her time to show the students through.

The girls were impressed with the rocking horse.
Charlie and Franklin had a good look through the History books
There were lots of old pieces of equipment to look at.
Looking at the old newspapers

Dream Seeds

On Tuesday the year 5 & 6 students were involved in the Dream Seeds Workshop. YouThrive had put together a large group of presenters, with differing backgrounds and study interests. Students learnt about aspiration, resilience and connection in light of preparing them for secondary school. Students explored a wide range of tasks that as a collective, they found they were capable of most or knew someone who was. They delved into a variety of values and shared examples of where they have displayed certain values. Students were then asked to look to the future and list what they would like to learn, what they would like to do in the future and what they would need to do to get there. These aspirations were posted on our tree. Students found this a valuable experience. Many thanks to St Josephs for providing the venue and to the NCLLEN for organising the workshop.
