Peer Teaching at St Louis De Montfort

On Friday the 20th February the DRI team had their first day out to St Louis De Montfort Primary School in Aspendale.  The program for the day was all about learning how to teach other students about the environment.  We also learnt about cool animals like the 11 armed sea star which can have anywhere from 7 to 14 arms.

Firstly, we were taken on a tour around the School and met the other DRI students from other schools.   It was fascinating learning all the facts they had about the environment. We mostly learnt about how to be a good presenter.

After that, it was play time and at St Louis De Montfort's on Fridays they have Friday Festival in their garden.  They have so many things to do there such as: bathe guinea pigs, make bracelets, go in a chicken coop and even a bird and reptile enclosure.  We were so lucky that we were able to hold an orange baby bird that was so soft and small. Then the bell went for us to go back inside.

Then it was time to practise our teaching the Year 2 classes all the things we had learnt.  It was very interesting, interactive and fun. Eventually it was time to present to the year 2 classes. Everyone was feeling very nervous but it actually ended up being quite fun. The best part about the presentation was when we blew the bubbles and the year 2s got all excited and stuff. The reason we used bubbles was to show how we can celebrate events like birthdays and use things other than balloons which are really really bad for our environment.

In the end it was an amazing experience for everyone and we all learnt something new like  that sea sponges have been around for 900 million years and they can regenerate from damage. We also loved teaching their year 2 classes about the ocean.  Overall we had a great time and are very grateful for all the opportunities we get.
