Safe and Supportive Learning Environments
Nurturing a Safe and Supportive Learning Environment
This week, our staff will participate in Team Teach Connect, a professional development program focused on positive behavior support. This training provides our teachers with advanced skills helping us to better understand the "why" behind student behaviors. By focusing on verbal and non-verbal communication strategies, we are strengthening our ability to maintain a calm, regulated, and inclusive environment where every student feels safe and valued. This investment in our staff ensures that we continue to lead with empathy and maintain a classroom culture where learning and wellbeing go hand-in-hand.
Try these steps at home to support your child's emotional regulation:
Validate first: If your child is upset, try saying, "I can see you're having a really hard time right now," instead of immediately asking them to stop the behavior. This helps lower their stress chemicals.
The "Low and Slow" approach: When things get heated, try lowering your volume and slowing down your speech. Our children often mirror our nervous systems; if we stay calm, it gives them a "pathway" back to calmness.
Wait for the "Cool Down": Save the "teaching moment" or the discussion about consequences for after the storm has passed. A brain in distress cannot learn; a brain that feels safe can.
Focus on the "Why": Ask yourself, "What is my child trying to tell me right now?" This shift from seeing "naughty" behavior to seeing a "struggling" child changes how we respond and strengthens our relationship with them.
