Hello from PW

We have been very busy. In Week 1 we celebrated NAIDOC week and learnt the significance of it. We listened to a variety of Indigenous stories throughout the week. Through ‘Our Home Our Heartbeat’ we learnt about the many famous Indigenous people in our country – singers and athletes (football, basketball, athletic, tennis stars), to name a few. Other stories included ‘The Rainbow Serpent’, ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours’ and ‘Kangaroo and Porpoise’. We made our own class rainbow serpent which is currently displayed in the corridor.

Over the last couple of weeks we have continued to learn more about writing sentences. We sing the Pevan and Sarah ‘Sentence’ song to help us remember to start with a capital letter, do the words make sense, space it out (spaces between words) and punctuation (full stops at the end of a sentence). We then looked at some pictures, discussed what we saw, before going back and writing 1, 2 or 3 sentences about it. The students have really enjoyed this.

Last week we began learning about addition. Each session we begin with a problem-solving task, e.g. Faye has 10 coins and John has six coins. How many coins do they have in total? We discuss it, identifying the important parts and what each means. Then we look at how we can solve it. We draw a picture to represent the problem and write a number sentence before solving it.

Students have used hands on materials to make 2 groups of objects, then joined them together and counted them all to find the total.
