Principal's Report

A message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to Term 3.

This term is camp term. All classes go on camp from a one-night camp in Class 1, normally at school, to a weeklong trek with camels in Class 7 and 8.

This week Class 2 will camp at Simpsons Gap. They will explore the area on foot learning about the animals and plants. They will sleep as a class in swags under the stars.

Class 7 and 8 leave next Monday and walk, over a week, around 40 Km in the area of Rainbow Valley. They will not have the luxury of swags as swags are too heavy and bulky for the camels to carry.

“The opportunity to camp with classmates away from the creature comforts and the security of home can be a daunting prospect for some students and their parents, but learning to rely on one’s own resources and those of peers and teachers is a chance to test oneself against the elements in a safe and supported environment.”

– Brian Dodd

The class camps aim to develop:

  • key survival and camping skills over the 8 years of Primary and Middle school
  • increasing levels of ‘independence’ and foster the capacity of children
to operate out of their own thinking and feeling.
  • increasing levels of ‘resilience’ in children.
  • a sense of co-operative endeavour in our students, the experience of
many hands make light work, and that work benefits the many, not just the individual.

The School appreciates the trust that parents and carers give to the teachers and staff taking the children away overnight and the school appreciates all the extra work the teachers and staff do to make each camp unique and successful. Teachers are amazing on camp. They are mother and father, counselor, and teacher. They are planners and camp leaders, and they are conscious of every child’s safety and wellbeing for the entire camp, night and day. We are aware that we have special teachers that are willing to take on camps as part of teaching.

Regards,

Dina
