Our eyes are essential for learning, playing and engaging in the world around us.
Why eye health matters
- Vision and learning - Good vision can be very important for success, be it in the classroom or the wider world. Many classroom activities from reading books to using computers are greatly aided by having clear eyesight. Eye strain or vision problems can make it challenging to participate in class.
- Preventing long term issues - Regular eye check ups can help detect problems early, such as near-sightedness, far-sightedness or astigmatism. Early intervention can prevent these issues from worsening.
- Overall well-being - Healthy eyes contribute to your overall health. Some systemic conditions, like diabetes and high blood pressure, can be detected through eye exams.
Tips for maintaining healthy eyes
- Get regular eye exams - schedule eye exams with an optometrist. They can check for vision changes and screen for any potential issues
- Follow a healthy diet - Eating foods rich in vitamins A, C and E, along with omega-3 fatty acids, can support eye health. Carrots, leafy greens and fish are great choices!
- Rest your eyes - Ensure you get enough sleep and give your eyes a break from screens to avoid digital eye strain.
Medicare allows for 1 bulk billed eye test every three years for anyone under the age of 65 years old. There is no need for a referral and many glasses shops (like Spec Savers and OPSM) have optometrists on site.
