This term our Year 7 students have visited the Briar’s Sanctuary to complement our unit on Classification. We had lessons with Rangers Tiffany and Val on Insect Diversity and Plant Diversity.

We learned that diversity of species would show us whether the wetlands is a healthy environment. Our students netted a variety of pond creatures to show that the Briars Wetlands are teeming with life in all strange shapes and sizes.

We also went to two very different areas of the sanctuary and completed a survey of the different plant life in the forest and then in the wetland area. We paced our 10 metres and created a legend to show some of the plant life within a 10x10 metre area, drawing the canopy versus low lying shrubs and undergrowth.

Lastly, we finished the day with a walk around the entire Wetland areas finding lots of wallabies and even a shy koala if you knew where to look.
