The KilvingTones Vocal Ensemble
A beautiful performance at The Melbourne Recital Centre
Part of Kilvington’s 100-year anniversary celebrations in 2023 included a gala performance at Hamer Hall, showcasing Kilvington’s remarkable musical talent. For this special occasion, several Kilvington Alumni were invited by Nicole Bull, Head of Performing Arts, to join in with the school choir.

It was off the back of this extraordinary and uplifting experience that the idea of forming an regular Alumni choir was hatched by past student, Ellie Pietsch from the Class of 1999.
The KilvingTones Vocal Ensemble has been singing every Monday for eighteen months now, under the skilled tutelage of David Ashton-Smith OAM and accomplished pianist, Kay Chim (Accompanist and Kilvington Piano teacher). During this time, the group has performed at several events, each one reflecting our shared joy of singing. As a group of women with a shared experience of fond memories of musical life at School, Kilvington’s values continue to influence the lives of the choir members today as demonstrated by the support and kindness we show each other.
Some of the choir members even travel significant distances to sing each week. To understand what it means to be a part of the Alumni choir, one of the members shares her thoughts below.
Being part of The KilvingTones Vocal Ensemble, the alumni choir for Kilvington Grammar, continues to be one of the true highlights of my week. Despite the distance I travel to get to and from there from Flinders each week, the sense of connection, joy, and belonging I feel each time makes every kilometer worthwhile.

There’s something deeply special about walking into a rehearsal room filled with familiar faces and shared history — people who once sang the same school songs, performed on the same stage, and now come together purely for the love of music. The KilvingTones community has become a warm, supportive circle where friendships are rekindled, laughter flows easily, and our shared passion for singing binds us together.

What I love most is that each rehearsal is both a musical experience and a reunion. It’s wonderful to catch up and hear what everyone has been doing since their Kilvington days — the careers, families, and adventures — while reminiscing about the unforgettable moments we shared through music.
Under the expert guidance of David Ashton-Smith OAM, our choir master, we continue to grow as singers and as a group. His instruction and encouragement have elevated not just our sound, but also our appreciation for the art of choral singing. Every time I leave a rehearsal, I feel uplifted and inspired — reminded of the simple joy that comes from making music together and the lifelong connections that it nurtures.
All past students, regardless of past experience, are invited to come along and join in the sheer joy of singing.

The cost to join the choir in Term 1, 2026 is $20 per casual visit or $125 for the Term (8 sessions). You can find out more and book to join here.
