Acting Principal

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of representing the College at the EREA Thanksgiving Mass and Dinner in Brisbane. This is an occasion where all the Principals from EREA Schools and Flexible schools, the Board Members from around Australia and the Trustees of Edmund Rice Education Australia (TEREA) come together to give thanks. The Mass was held at St Joseph’s College Gregory Terrace, and we celebrated our Catholic Faith together.
The common theme running through the Mass and Dinner is our shared Charter. The Charter uses our four Touchstones to describe the culture of a Catholic school which is striving for authenticity in the Edmund Rice tradition. The Touchstones are Liberating Education, Gospel Spirituality, Inclusive Community and Justice and Solidarity. The Charter weaves through its three sources of Wisdom: Scripture, First Nations and Church. All these wisdoms were showcased over the night, with First Nations students from Gregory Terrace proudly welcoming us to Country. We celebrated mass together and reflected on Scripture.
It is these types of occasions that you are reminded that St Patrick’s College, Strathfield is part of a bigger network. We are in a network of 54 Schools as well as Flexible Schools. EREA educate over 43,000 students around the country. They operate in every state and territory. Through Edmund Rice Education Beyond Boarders (EREBB), the Edmund Rice Charism is being spread through 22 countries. On a global scale, we are just one school in a network of 281 schools around the globe. We have 1,600 students. The biggest school in the global network is Ruben Centre in Kenya which educates double our school population and whom we have partnered with in our fundraising.
It is important for our community to know all of this as our reach - Edmund Rice’s reach - is something we need to be conscious of as our actions on a day-to-day basis have a ripple effect around the globe. It is a proud tradition in Australia dating back to the Christian Brothers opening their first school in Australia in 1869. In just over two years' time, SPC will celebrate its centenary. We must always remember that our actions represent not just our community but the EREA community. It is this community that not only binds us together but makes us stronger.
