Year 2 News

From Sally, Year 2 teacher
Positivley Resiliant
Last week Year Two had a wonderful time splashing around in the pool. Despite the changeable weather, all students showed resilience and positivity throughout the week as they learnt valuable water safety skills and increase their swimming confidence. The Year Two teachers were very particularly impressed by how well our students represented the school, showing our RISE values at all times. We'd like to say a big thank you to all the parent helpers for joining us in walking to and from the pool; we really appreciate you taking the time out of your day to support us!
In Mathematics, we have been furthering our knowledge of measurement by learning how to calculate the area and perimeter of flat shapes. This learning was linked to our previous shapes unit as students began by using an informal unit of measurement, such as a triangle, to measure the area of a shape. Students were extended by being introduced to centimetres squared, which conveniently is the size of each of the squares in their Maths grid book. This learning culminated in them designing a bird's eye view of their dream house and measuring the area and perimeter of each room.
As the end of the year rapidly approaches, the Year Two students have been busy writing their Semester Two reflection letter. Students were reminded of letter writing etiquette, such as starting your letter with a friendly greeting and signing off at the end. Writing these letters was a wonderful opportunity for the students to reflect on how far they have come this year, both academically and socially. Students were also supported to set a goal for Semester One next year. Their reflection letters will be coming home at the end of the year, alongside their Semester Two report.
In Reading, we have been reviewing previously taught spelling rules, such as how the two letters 'wr' make the /r/ sound. They have also been introduced to the suffix '-ible', which means 'able to be', and learnt that when a suffix beginning with a vowel is added to a base word that ends in 'y', you change the 'y' to and 'i', for example: ready + -ness = readiness.
In the past fortnight, students have been introduced to the website 'Hour of Code'. This website teaches coding skills in a fun and engaging way. Students are guided through the process of coding their 'Sprite' (character) to perform certain tasks, such as moving location or saying something. Coding is a brilliant way for students to develop skills in problem-solving, logical thinking, and creativity.
