From Caen, Senior School Auslan teacher
The school year is almost coming to an end, it has been wonderful to reflect on just how much growth our students have shown in Auslan. Their confidence, fluency, and enthusiasm have continued to develop, and it’s clear that they are becoming thoughtful and expressive communicators. I am incredibly proud of the progress they have made.
This term, we have been learning Celebration Signs which is perfect timing as we head into the holiday season! Students have absolutely loved exploring how to sign different celebrations, and they enthusiastically shared which celebrations are special to them and their families. These conversations led us into rich discussions about culture, family traditions, and heritage, allowing students to connect Auslan to their own lived experiences.
As always, students have been applying key Auslan concepts such as HOLM (Handshape, Orientation, Location, Movement) and NMFs (Non-Manual Features). These are essential elements of signing, and it has been fantastic to see how well they have retained and applied them while learning new vocabulary.
Another exciting focus this term has been the Deaflympics. Students were captivated by the history of the event and how it has evolved over time. We explored the technological advancements that now make the Deaflympics more accessible and inclusive such as visual starting lights, tactile cues, and improved communication support for athletes. Students also had the chance to watch some Deaflympic events in the classroom, which helped bring everything to life and sparked great conversations about Deaf culture, representation, and inclusion.
Throughout the term, students have remained deeply engaged, asking thoughtful questions, and showing genuine curiosity. Their willingness to practise, collaborate, and try new signs has made this a truly rewarding term of learning.
How can you support Auslan at home?
One great way is to watch clips from the Deaflympics together. The official website is easy to navigate, and many past events are free to watch on YouTube. This not only supports your child’s Auslan learning but also helps them understand more about Deaf culture and community.
Thank you for your ongoing encouragement and support. I look forward to finishing the year with celebration, connection, and positivity as we recognise the wonderful achievements of all our students.
