Religious Education
The end of Term 2 and the beginning of Term 3 has been a busy time in our Religious Education classrooms, as we strive to make every minute count in our learning about the Catholic faith.
Midway through Term 2, we welcomed Mr David Kennedy and other Gideon members into the Year 7 Religious Education classrooms. Students were fortunate to be gifted a little New Testament to use in class and eventually take home with them.
These Testaments have proven extremely valuable in supporting students’ learning of “Literary Styles in the Bible,” as they discover how to locate individual scripture passages, even competing in a “Bible Scavenger Hunt.” With Seminarian Brother Patrick visiting our College most Tuesdays, some groups were lucky enough to get a few hints!
Year 8 have been exploring how “The Church Spreads the Good News”, as they commence Term 3 learning in Religious Education. In alignment with this unit, students have had the chance to consider the concept of “hospitality” and Christian service through the foundation of Nano Nagle and the Presentation Sisters.
Students have created artworks ranging from digital, handmade and even literary, which showcase the legacy of hospitality still alive in our Catholic Community today. A selection of these works have been entered into the 2024 Nagle Prize Competition, and we wish our entrants the best of luck.
Our Year 9 cohort have impressed us with their recent Assessment Task, as they created their own “Image of Jesus” in a variety of contemporary settings. This task showcased some extraordinary talents, with paintings, digital art, sketches, sculptures and even embroidery amongst the submissions.
Students are now engaging with their Term 3 unit, “The New Testament”, honing their organisational and self-directed learning skills with Canvas Module Pages to support their learning. We are proud to see students grow in their digital literacy as well as take ownership over their individual learning.
The creativity continues with Year 10 recently submitting their “Mary and the Saints” Assessment Task, expressing the virtues of Mary in connection with an upcoming Saint. One favourite individual among the researched, being Blessed Carlo Acutis, a young boy from Italy who is known as the patron saint of the internet.
This term our Year 10 students are delving into the world of “Ethics for Life” by discussing Catholic and secular perspectives around the dignity of the human person and the sacred value of life.
Our Year 11 Studies of Religion students are completing the last of their preliminary course as it nears its completion. Students have been able to broaden their understanding of the Islamic tradition as well as enrich their existing knowledge of Christian beliefs, ethics and practices. We would also like to wish our Year 12 students the best of luck as they commence their Trial HSC Examinations this week.
