We’ve reached the end of Week 8, and what a busy couple of weeks it has been! We’ve had a fantastic time with ‘A Day of AI’, publishing our Persuasive Writing, rehearsing and performing our production at Rowville Secondary College, and enjoying our first day of Summer Sport. We’re incredibly proud of all the hard work and enthusiasm from our Year 5/6 students.

Scoresby Secondary College Day of Discovery
Parents or guardians will need to head to Compass to approve consent for their child to attend the Scoresby Secondary College annual Day of Discovery.
On Monday the 26th of August, the Year 5/6 students celebrated the Day of AI (Artificial Intelligence). We explored the many pros and cons of artificial intelligence such as what is and isn't AI and, finally, how AI learns.
Within the first session of the day we learnt what is classified as artificial intelligence and how to notice it. We looked at 2 different pieces of technology and tried to identify them as AI and discovered what benefits they could bring to the world. In the second session we discovered the potential dangers of AI as they could create many horrific photos and videos with a paragraph or so; we also learnt how to avoid this by using safe AI’s.
Later, we learnt AI can also be used for good such as making funny photos or videos, but you still need to be careful in the way you post them. During another lesson, we discovered how AI can use small sentences to make a variety of stories, essays and more. In addition to this we also found that AI can learn based on prior knowledge. Take YouTube as an example, say someone watches a lot of cat videos, the YouTube algorithm learns from this and suggests more videos the viewer may like. We all had an amazing time learning about the different aspects of artificial intelligence. We hope that everyone learnt something new from this experience.

On 29th August we had the Scoresby Primary School Mr Blue Sky production. We first started the day with our whole school rehearsals at the stage. It took a lot of confidence, strategy and practice, but we made it work. We did two instrumental practices and two dance practices for our song We Didn’t Start the Fire.
On the night, the school came to the Rowville Secondary College Eastern Campus to do our production. We had to wait a while for each of our performances but it was worth it! 5/6H were the first senior dance, so we were a bit nervous. It took a lot of confidence but everyone managed to make it a success! It was a great night that we know everyone enjoyed. All of our hard work and training had paid off!

On Wednesday the 28th of August, our whole school had a production dress rehearsal in the hall. Everyone got to practise their dances, and speakers were able to showcase their talking skills. Everyone had fun and we were excited for the production.
On Thursday 29th of August we had another whole school production rehearsal but this time at Rowville Performing Arts Centre. We got to do our dances, our live music performances, and speaking parts. It was amazing to see how well everyone performed.
At 5:45pm everyone got to the Performing Arts Centre and went to their change rooms to get ready and take photos with their class. As we were getting ready to get on stage, we played quiet activities while we waited. At 6:30pm the show started and Jayden and Varsha had their first scene. After all the speaking was done, students performed their dances. First was 5/6H, then 5/6W, and last was 5/6S. Then the live music started and Elena and Eva were the hosts to call up our classes and say some riddles. And to finish it off, we did The Nutbush for the finale. We had a fantastic time while it lasted.

On Wednesday 28th of August, the whole school went into the hall to have our full dress rehearsal. We were accompanied by some kinder kids from Scoresby Village Kinder who came to watch our dances; they even joined in with The Nutbush, which was our finale dance. It was so much fun watching all the speaking roles and all the different dances.
Then, on Thursday the 29th of August, we all came to school at 8:45am and we got on the buses and made our way to Rowville Secondary College Eastern Campus. We got off the bus and headed to the stage to have another rehearsal of the dances and the live music performances. We got to go backstage and we lined up and waited quietly to perform. Everyone was tired after a big day dancing so we packed up and went back to school. We had a rest for the big night ahead.
We all arrived at the venue with our costumes, ready to perform. We all went to our allocated rooms and waited for our time to shine. When it was our turn, we did as we practised and everything went well. It was a really fun night and we all had a blast!

Volleyball
On Tuesday 3rd September, 23 Year 5/6 students went to Boronia K-12 school to play volleyball. There were two teams representing Scoresby PS. We had a girls and boys team. The girls team won most of their games, and the same goes for the boys. We all had so much fun playing volleyball and the day went so fast! We all tried our best and can't wait for another day next week.

Tennis
For Summer Sports, we had the pleasure of hitting the courts at Mountain Gate Tennis Club for an exciting day of tennis. We played three rounds of both singles and doubles, giving our all in every match. Although we didn't come away with any wins, the experience was all about more than just the score. We showed great sportspersonship, cheering each other on, and kept a positive attitude. It was a fantastic day of tennis, teamwork and making memories on the court. Looking forward to the next challenge at round 2!

Softball
Softball was played at Gilbert Park in Knoxfield and we had a team of 8. We played against Knox Park, Bayswater West and Holy Trinity. Many of us had not played softball before so it was good to practise our skills, and each game we continued to improve our skills. Although we didn’t win any games, we showed great sportsmanship by congratulating the winning team after each game. We look forward to competing in round 2.

Cricket
For the 2024 5/6 Summer Sports, some of the students chose to participate in Cricket for their summer sport. Cricket was a very fun experience for every student that wished to come. It was a very collaborative and enticing experience for everyone, although neither the Boys or Girls teams secured any wins on our first day of the event. Hopefully, we can potentially end up getting some more runs to win us some games next week. We had our first game on the 3rd of September and we’re playing again on the 11th of September. We had 2 excellent coaches that were helping us with our skills and performance - we had Mrs Rheumer, the Vice Principal, and the 5/6S aide, Samantha Edwards. For the next game day we’re having Samantha Edwards and Mr Byass as our coaches. Our first day was just a warm-up for us, and the next day, we won’t lose without a fight!

Junior Excellence Tuition at Scoresby (JET@S) is an exciting initiative for grade 4 and 5 students, conducted after school during Term 4 at Scoresby Secondary College.
It is based on research into the relationship between student engagement and learning. The program has been introduced as part of the transformation of Scoresby Secondary College that has led to the development of partnerships with tertiary providers including Monash and Melbourne Universities, industry partners Thermo Fisher Scientific, Australian Business Community Network, Building Better Australians Incorporated, and acknowledgement of the changes by many educational leaders.
