Rubicon Camp

We left on Monday morning, setting off on the 1.5 hour drive to Rubicon Camp in Nayook. Upon arrival we settled into the space and unpacked our gear for the week. We then got our outdoor gear for the week and got a bit of a tour of the Rubicon Camp. That night we did flashlight orienteering around the camp, which was challenging but really fun! We then settled into our beds for the night and Karen and Mr. Burrows had the task of making sure we went to sleep quickly!

Tuesday was a big day! Mountain biking and Orienteering. Steven and I (Justin) managed to get very lost in our orienteering and had to use our walkie talkie to communicate back to camp that we were lost. Another group was eventually able to help us, so that we survived!

Wednesday was rafting down the Yarra River. For me (Lily), this was the highlight of the camp. We had to prepare all our clothes and equipment for the day and then set off for the Yarra. We rafted a number of kms, stopped for some lunch and continued on. The final rapids of the day were the biggest and most challenging. They were super fun and we were guided by our teacher, Kate, to get through the rapids. When we got back we were greeted with a massive hail storm while packing up. This didn't dampen our mood, instead we had an impromptu dance party!

Thursday was High ropes and caving. Caving was really interesting. We got to look at glow worms in the cave and had to crawl over big drop offs that sat within the cave. We also found some quartz rocks in the cave, which you could crack against each other to create a spark. There was also a creek in there, which led us all to get wet...again!

Friday we finished with abseiling and a review of the week. Abseiling got us out of our comfort zone but it was unique and fun experience. Overall, everyone had a great time and we learned a lot about the outdoors and adventuring. The food and the views at the camp made it a really cool place to be. We also had an awesome time bonding with our friends and interacting with the Rubicon staff.
