Foundation-Grade 1 Miss Bennett

Another two weeks have flown by in the F/1 Beehive and there has been so much excitement with learning and extra curriculars. Over the past two weeks the F/1 Busy Bees have been lucky enough to be apart of:

- Science Week

- Book Week

- Bullying No Way Week

- Going to watch the St Augustines Production of Frozen Jr

- Maths Olympics

- St Pats Olympics

Our learning has been ON-FIRE with all of the students working super hard with their learning goals and learning new things each day, Miss Bennett has been so impressed with the standard she is seeing in their learning activities. Keep up the great work guys! Here are some learning highlights over the last two weeks:

- We have introduced our daily news roster in F/1 and the students have been loving bringing in a toy from home or sharing any news they have with their peers. Lottie enjoyed bringing in her 'Bop It' and showing the students how she got her highest score ever!

- The Grade 1's have been busy learning the digraphs 'oi' and 'oy'. They used their new knowledge to write the dictation sentence 'The boy felt joy with his toys;'. The Foundation students also completed a dictation sentence for the letter Z. They wrote the sentence 'My zip is red'. Miss Bennett was super impressed with their sounding out and having a red hot go.

- In Maths, the Base 10 blocks have been a fan favourite with lots of building and constructing numbers to 100. This week the students used a number spinner to provide a number in which they then had to make with the base 10 blocks. The Grade 1's worked on numbers in the hundreds and the Foundies used their knowledge of numbers to 99.

- In Writing we played 'Hot Seat' where we pretended to be the main character from our Text-Based Unit 'GARY'. The students asked Gary questions about his journey and the student in the hot seat had to answer about Gary journeys.

It's been another wonderful two-weeks in the beehive. We're looking forward to the next two and sharing what we have gotten up to. There is so much to celebrate in Term 3.

 Grade 1-2 Miss Hart

Can you believe we are already halfway through Term 3! This term has been flying and has no intention of slowing down. We have so many exciting things to look forward to this term as well as be thankful for what we have already been part of. Here’s a bit of a run down:

Literacy

In Phonics, students have been developing their knowledge of split digraph sounds. They have consolidated their understanding of these sounds by creating crafty split digraph rainbows and learning new rotation games. One of their absolute favourites is the a-e and i-e ‘Snakes and Ladders.’ This game is played like your normal game of Snakes and Ladders, but students come across words they need to pronounce. In Writing, students have been reading the book Gary. Gary the pigeon can't fly. When his racing pigeon friends head off in their travel basket, Gary stays at home. He organises his scrapbook of travel mementos and dreams about the adventures the other pigeons are having. But when Gary accidentally ends up a very long way from home, he discovers that flying is not the only way to have adventures. Students have been working on recount writing, using the time connectives first, next and finally as well as finding synonyms for the word ‘went.’

Numeracy

Students have been learning about multiplication and division. Students have been using hands-on materials to learn about arrays, groups of and skip counting. In our class we absolutely love warming up our maths brains with the ‘Mental Maths’ booklets. Each day students spend 5 minutes completing a column of mathematical tasks that are centred around topics we have covered. It has been a great way to engage students in the maths lessons as well as fostering an environment of communication in numeracy.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, students are learning about History. Over the past few weeks students have been sharing with each other their family histories along with comparing and contrasting toys, communication and school life in the past and present. Over the coming weeks, students will delve into the history of Tongala, recreating timelines and stories of the past. Students will then complete their assessment piece for the unit.

Grade 3 Mrs Stock

What a busy and fun couple of weeks we have had!

Camp:

All the Grade 3/4 students went to Doxa Camp in Malmsbury this week for one night. The students had the opportunity to participate in three activities while on camp, these being the giant swing, archery and low ropes.

Everyone was very impressed with the accommodation, friendly staff and the yummy food!

It was a shame it rained on our last day but we made the most of it and continued on with the activities in our raincoats.

Congratulations to Jaxon, Francis and Ryder for winning our Trivia night at camp!

Waranga Sports at P-12:

Here are some of our highlights from the day:

Ben- I enjoyed the 200m sprints because I won.

Hudson- Seeing my friends from footy because I don't get to see them much

Phoebe- The relays because I got to run.

Sophie- The hurdles because I came first in my race.

Ryder- The 100m race because I came 2nd.

Liam- The relays because we got to see the people run and try their best.

Stevie- The relays because it was my first time doing a relay before and I did well.

Math:

We have been learning about 3D shapes in Grade 3. This week we constructed different 3D shapes with playdough and matchsticks and went on a 'shape hunt' around the classroom.

Grade 5-6 Miss Rasmussen

In Maths, we've been diving into calculating percentages! We've discovered that finding 10% of an amount is a great starting point to calculate other percentages. Similarly, breaking down 25% by halving an amount twice has been really helpful. It’s taking some time to fully grasp, but we’re slowly getting the hang of it.

In English, our text-based unit on Number the Stars has led us to explore the historical context of the German occupation of Denmark. We’ve been learning about how it affected the people living there and the difficult decisions they had to make to protect their Jewish neighbours.

Our Inquiry topic has taken us back in time to the colonisation of Australia’s states. We've been learning about the explorers and some fascinating stories from that time—like a convict who managed to hop to freedom from Port Arthur by wearing a kangaroo carcass, only to be shot by a guard who wanted kangaroo for dinner that night. We also learned about St Mary MacKillop’s move from Melbourne to the Adelaide Colony, where the rule of religious freedom was enforced.

Finally, we had a fantastic time at the athletic sports event and are thrilled that some of our classmates will be progressing to the next level!
