College Captains Start of Term 2 Report

Message From Our College Captains

Welcome back to term 2 South Oakleigh!

We hope everyone had a relaxing 2 weeks off school.

We have kicked back into action from day 1 this term, with events happening all over the school. Firstly, we would like to thank the wider and college community for their efforts towards fundraising efforts for the Monash Children’s Hospital School.

Now let’s go on to a few things that have happened/been happening here during the start of this term!

On Tuesday 23rd of April, we had our house cross country. Well done to everyone who participated in this event. After some house competition on the day, Grevillea took the win, congratulations!

On Wednesday 24th of April, Genna and I went in to listen to the year 7 leader candidates give their speeches for S.R.C. positions. We would like to commend the year 7 candidates for applying and giving a speech to their cohort. Additionally, our focus as college captains this term is to build a connection with our year 7 cohort. So, during this term, in some of our study periods, we will be visiting year 7 classes, providing support and answering questions or addressing any concerns. Also, on the same day, we paused to remember those men and women who served in the First World War. We honoured the values that had been invested in the original Anzacs – loyalty, selflessness, courage – and the ways in which later generations measured their own achievements against those of the soldiers who fought on Gallipoli. The next day, we attended the dawn service in Oakleigh and layed a wreath on behalf of our college community. We have also launched something big this term brought to you by our senior student leadership team. An initiative that has been in the works since 2023, we are thrilled to announce the introduction of our new College Podcast, “What’s up SOC!”, hosted by your Banksia House Captain Stacey Maskas and Grevillea House Captain Ella Hayes. This new podcast will boost communication throughout our school. Broadcasted every Monday morning, it will feature college news and updates as well as S.R.C. announcements, school/house events, special guests and skits/surprise segments. Thankyou to our Media department, Mr Philip Clark, Athanasius T and Antosha B for providing the TV Studio space and putting time aside to assist us with every episode. We would also like to thank Ms Hoernel and Mr Bowman for their support and encouragement with launching the podcast. We also extend this thankyou to our principal class for working closely with us to launch this big initiative to our college community.

Close to the end of this term, years 7-11 (VCE) students will be undertaking semester 1 exams, whilst our year 11 (VCE VM) cohort will be going on work placement. It is of utmost importance that we use this opportunity the best we can to enhance our academic studies, but also remember to take care of yourself along the way. For the senior school, it is an eventful term.

Friday 3rd of May, Year 11 and 12 attended the VCE and Careers Expo hosted at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. It was a great opportunity to attend VCE subject seminars and interact with representatives from universities, colleges and TAFEs, employment services, apprenticeship and traineeship programs, VCE support services, international exchange and GAP year programs. Thankyou to Athena from our Careers department for organising this event.

In other news, our year 11’s will be having their formal in September, with planning starting from now and our year 12’s having our valedictory dinner in October, with planning also commencing from now. That is all from us for this edition of our newsletter, as always, if there are any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to reach out to me and Genna. We wish everyone a great term ahead!

Melbourne Holocaust Museum

‘Last week, the year 10 history classes went to the Melbourne Holocaust Museum. Through the guided tour, we were able to have a deeper understanding of the experiences people went through during the Holocaust. Our guide was both welcoming and knowledgeable on the subject and explained every aspect of it clearly. On the second half of the excursion, we were lucky enough to hear Mr Andre Dubrowin, a Holocaust survivor, speak of his personal experiences during the Holocaust. Afterwards, we were able to ask any questions we had about him. In all, it was an educational experience for all students who attended. I felt I was very fortunate to be able to meet and hear a personal account of a Holocaust survivor's experiences.’
