2024 Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Hazel Glen College is excited to be participating. The VPRC application offers a range of exciting features including:
- access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
- a modern user-friendly interface
- rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
- the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6 September 2024.
Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

Curiosity ANZAC Day
As part of our Curiosity program, all students in the Primary Years spent the first 2 weeks of Term 2 learning about ANZAC Day. Our students explored why this day is so special and what it means. Classes read age-appropriate picture story books and did activities to learn about the symbols of ANZAC Day and the brave ANZAC men and women and their friendship and sacrifice. Each class made a special wreath to show our thanks and respect. At our assembly, each class proudly presented their wreaths, remembering the heroes of ANZAC Day together. Below are some pictures of our student's ANZAC Day activities.
Year 1 Curiosity - Our History, Our Future
In Week 3, our Year 1 students will begin their curiosity inquiry into the community at Hazel Glen College. To elicit wonderings from our Year 1 students around Hazel Glen College's Community, the Year 1 teachers have created a 'Guess Who?' display in Learning Neighbourhood 1 of important people and their roles. Below is a picture of part of the display, how many people and their roles at Hazel Glen College do you know?
Maths Games and Maths Olympics
This year, approximately 40 Year 4 and Year 5 students will be participating in the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad. This program challenges students to extend their mathematical thinking and reasoning skills. All students are currently participating in weekly lessons to collaborate with their peers, share their ideas and justify their thinking as they further develop their skills. Throughout the year they will also participate in some competition days along with other students across Australia and New Zealand.
