Year 8 & 9

Assistant Principal's Report

In the first few weeks of term two we all settle back into school routines. With the colder weather upon us it is important that students have the winter uniform items. There is the school winter jacket available that will keep everyone dry and warm. We know it can be a challenge for parents who may be already at work when their children leave for school, but we would really appreciate it if out of uniform items (such as hoodies, puffer jackets and tracksuit pants) were left at home. It is a safety risk for us if young people are out of uniform and we are unable to identify them as belonging to our school community. Many young people will be expected to wear a uniform at their first jobs, so it is good for them to learn to understand why they need to wear their WCC uniform correctly. Should you need support with uniform please contact Rochelle at Student Services.

We have lots of exciting activities coming up in the next couple of months. Next week we will be running our (rescheduled) cross country for all students in years 7 – 9. On May 23rd our year 7s and 8s will be involved in a career expo. Middle year exams will be running between the 3rd and 6th of June, before a well-deserved student free day on June 7 and King’s birthday public holiday. We will then start the second semester with the highly anticipated year 7 and 8 ‘Night at the Museum’, an after-school event where our students showcase the work they have been doing in Humanities.

We will be commemorating the International Day Against LGBTIQA+ Discrimination (IDAHOBIT) which is held annually on 17 May. It marks the anniversary of the day in 1990 when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. IDAHOBIT is a chance for us as a school to celebrate LGBTIQA+ equality and raise awareness of the discrimination LGBTIQA+ people still face. Over the course of this week we will be raising awareness from an educational point of view and will be doing some small activities during break times such as creating a message board and making badges and ribbons in support.

Looking forward to an exciting term ahead.

Year Level Leader's Report Year 8

The Year 8’s have had a wonderful start to term 2.  The cross country is this week on Wednesday the 15th of May, following the recent Athletics day where a huge number of students were able to show off their athletic abilities. Everyone had a great time.

On Wednesday 22nd May there will be a presentation in our assemblies on the 2024  - Year 9 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) elective and classes, the football academy and AVID elective to inform students about these programs.

On Thursday May the 23rd we will have our jobs expo. Professionals from outside the school will be running workshops giving our students careers advice and giving our students valuable real-life advice on working life. Thank you to Pina Siragusano, our careers leader, for organising and running this event. It is a great opportunity for our students to gain insight into what is in store for them after high school.

Just a friendly reminder about the Semester one exams for Year 8, that will commence on Wednesday the 5th of June concluding on Thursday the 6th June.  After exams we commence our second semester on 11th of June.

On the 19th of June there will be a drama incursion presented by Gibber Education explaining the risks of alcohol and other risky behaviours. You may not realise but your teen’s brain will continue developing until their early 20’s. Critical areas that help them with learning, planning, emotional stability, and memory are all still growing and forming. This means your teen is particularly vulnerable to long-term damage caused by underage drinking, and the safest option for them is to abstain from drinking alcohol until they’re at least 18.  This theatre-based lesson on alcohol and the danger of underage drinking is aligned to the HPE curriculum and an excellent addition to our school’s wellbeing program.

I’d like to thank the year 8 team for supporting the cohort. Everyday I am humbled by the effort and dedication that our staff show is supporting the educational, social and emotional needs of students.

We look forward to supporting you child/children throughout their time at Wyndham Central College.

Year Level Leader's Report Year 9

Wow what a start to a Term!  Year 9 has had so many things happen already, with much more planned.

In week one we started our Romeo and Juliet English unit with an incursion by the Australian Shakespeare Company. Students were able to watch important scenes be performed and discuss the themes of the play with the actors.

In week three we held our Athletics carnival. It was fantastic to see many of the year 9's participating and competing in several events throughout the day. Well done to all students who participated.

9G started off our student led year level assemblies with a great assembly. It is wonderful to see each student contribute in their own way, whether that is building the assembly powerpoint, facilitating our tutor challenge game, or creating other joyous moments for the cohort.

Last week sees our year 9's completing the Morrisby profiles, which will help guide them later this term/early in Term 3 when they carefully select subjects for 2025.

Exams will soon be here. It is vital students continue to revise their Cornell Notes and materials leading up to week 8 examinations.

The mercury has begun to drop and winter will soon set in, students need to be in full school uniform at all times. Please get in contact with your child’s tutor teacher or student services if you require any support with uniform.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out.
