Highlights from Heights
Students in the Middle Learning Centre (MLC) have been busy this term exploring new concepts, developing new skills and experiencing new levels of responsibility! Here’s a look at what they've been up to:
Maths - Diving into Division
Students have been exploring the relationship between division and multiplication, using their knowledge of the times tables along with hands on activities to build their understanding of the concept and process of division. They’ve gained confidence in dividing numbers and understanding how division relates to everyday situations. Their enthusiasm and growth have been fantastic to witness!
Literacy: Fairytales with a Twist!
Students have been delving into classic fairytales—but with a creative twist! They've been re-imagining these stories through the eyes of different characters. For example, they recently explored "Jack and the Beanstalk" from the giant’s perspective. Students have enjoyed stepping into the giant’s shoes, and writing about his thoughts and feelings throughout the story. Their thoughtful and imaginative pieces have brought new depth to these timeless tales!
Kitchen Garden: Cooking Samosas
In the preparation for Diwali, students learnt to prepare and cook vegetable samosas. They explored flavours, measured ingredients, and learned essential cooking skills. They used fresh herbs from our garden and lemons from a local source (Mrs. Cottier's garden). The Hub was filled with delicious scents as they chopped the ingredients, although not everyone loved chopping the onions. They all agreed it was worth it in the end however, as they sat together to enjoy the finished product.
Exploring Life Cycles and Pet Care
Finally the MLC classrooms have been filled with curiosity and excitement as our students welcomed some important visitors to our school - baby rabbits, guinea pigs and stick insects!
Our students have been watching the rabbits grow as they investigate life cycles. They have also researched facts about an animal of their choice and used their notes to create an informative slide-shows. Below are two examples of slides created by our students.
By Safwan & Minh Thu
Importantly, by observing and looking after the rabbits and guinea pigs students have been learning firsthand about growth, development, and the basic needs of living creatures. This experience also introduced them to the responsibilities of pet ownership, emphasising the commitment and care that animals require.
Great work everyone!
