RRRR and Visible Wellbeing

Our wellbeing focus is derived from the evidence-based Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum (developed by a team from the Youth Research Centre, Melbourne Graduate School of Education, University of Melbourne).

Further information about Respectful Relationships education can be found at:  https://www.vic.gov.au/respectful-relationships

Our whole school approach is being strengthened by a partnership with Professor Lea Waters who is facilitating professional learning at HPS. Visible Wellbeing is the culmination of 20 years of high-impact research in psychology and education conducted and published by Professor Lea Waters.

In Term 4, the main focus is from RRRR, Topic 3 Positive Coping. The program will emphasise transition activities designed to support students in their transition to secondary school. This will include:

  • identifying positive coping strategies
  • enacting positive self-talk
  • understanding how negative self-talk can wear us down
  • identifying emotional resilience skills needed to navigate the challenges and changes associated with a new beginning

Teachers are very careful to protect the privacy of all individuals and will stop any personal sharing of experiences. We encourage you to continue these wellbeing discussions at home, engaging in conversations about what your child has been learning in their Wellbeing sessions.  If you have any concerns about topics raised, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Puberty Clues - Health Program

Puberty Clues has a Health focus (in the Victorian Curriculum sub-strand of Personal, Social and Community Health) and will be delivered to our students by Gair Miller. Gair has delivered this program to our 5/6 students since 2008 and has customised the program specifically for us each year. The program will include a quick revision of last year's content and will then deliver new Year 6 content. We hope this program creates opportunities for you and your child to discuss the ups and downs of puberty.

  • Tuesday 15 October: Puberty changes
  • Tuesday 22 October: Emotional changes (including online safety)
  • Tuesday 29 October: Reproduction (including online safety and the law)

Transition to Secondary School

In Term 4, our students are hesitant, nostalgic and excited, all at the same time because they are so close to completing their primary school journey. The transition to Year 7 is made more successful when families sit down and talk through the 'roller coaster' of emotions that are likely to come up.
