Level 3 & 4 Wonga Weekly

Week 5, Term 4

🌿 WEEK FIVE LEARNING

CBL

The Big Idea for Term Four is CURIOSITY. We will explore curiosity through the lens of exploration of geography and impacts on natural life. This week we will be looking at specific features of the states and territories of Australia including population, flora and fauna, vegetation and climate.

At home you can: talk about how places you have visited in Australia and overseas are different geographically.

📚 Literacy

Phonics

During our daily phonics sessions, students are being explicitly taught how to read and spell a range of sounds. In Grade 3, we are studying the pattern of e, signalling a soft c or g (ie gems, centre, accept, oxygen) and contractions and the suffix 'ly' in Grade 4.

At home you can: Ask your child about the spelling sounds they are covering this week. List some words for each spelling pattern.

Reading and Writing

Our mentor text for Term Four is 'The One and Only Ivan'. We are using this text to build vocabulary, discuss literary themes, and as a springboard for writing creatively and persuasively. This week we are continuing to work on adverbial words and phrases, which tell us what, when, where or why something is happening. We will explore the how verbs and verb groups can change the tense of a sentence.

What you can do at home:

You can read 'The One and Only Ivan' with your child via Showbie in the Level 3/4 'Reading' folder. Encourage your child to set aside time to read every night, include time to read aloud and or record themselves reading on their iPad.

Ask your child to persuade you which is better (flavours, teams, seasons etc) and provide 3 clear reasons why.

🎭  In weeks 6,7 and 8 students will be participating in Readers Theatre as well as creating their own performances. We will be making puppets and would be grateful if children could being in some materials to make puppets from.

Materials might include; old socks, cardboard, googly eyes, brown paper bags, wool, scrap material etc.

🎲 Maths

This week we will finalise our learning about angles as a measure of turn. We will discuss vocabulary such as - right, acute, obtuse, straight, reflex and revolution.  We will also be revisiting addition and subtraction through worded problems.

What you can do at home:

Notice angles within your house and discuss if they are smaller or larger than a right angle.

Please revise reading analogue times with your child regularly.

Have a look on Mathletics in the games section to find 'Rainforest Maths'. Scroll down to addition and subtraction to further develop your childs understanding.

You can support your child to practice their times tables. In Grade Three, our focus is on 2s, 3s, 5s and 10s. In Grade Four we continue to strengthen these as well as building in 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s and 9s.

🌿 REMINDERS

🌱 Students are encouraged to bring their iPads fully charged each day

🌱 We are quickly running out of tissues and wipes, we would accept any donations with gratitude

🌱If you can help out for SAKG, please check your emails for the volunteer link.

🌱 We are using whiteboard markers and boards everyday. We recommend that students could bring a set of their own that are labeled.

🌱 Hats On

As of September 1st, we would like to remind you that our school adheres to the SunSmart policy set by the Victorian Government. All students are required to wear a broad-brimmed hat when outdoors from the 1st September when UV levels are typically higher.

Please ensure your child brings a hat to school every day to protect them from the sun's harmful rays.

Thank you for your support in keeping our school community safe and sun-smart.
