INTRODUCTION
This term, we have many events to look forward to as the year progresses. We have graduation, camp, and the 5/6 pool party. This term, we have learned many different topics. We have explored various patterns and types of poetry in literature. In Maths, the 5/6s have been exploring different varieties of nets that form into 3-dimensional objects. In Inquiry, the students have learned how to be changemakers by creating ideas to solve the 17 UN Sustainable Goals within the school community.
LITERACY
Literacy, the 5/6 community has been working on writing a range of poems such as cinquains, kennings, haikus, and free verse. During reading time, we’ve also been doing Independent Reading, which allows students to read their texts of choice. The 5/6s have been reading their assigned pages from their literature circle books and completing the diverse tasks their roles provide, such as the Discussion Director role, which involves asking your group questions related to the pages you read that week. Literature Circles help students develop their ability to comprehend and discuss texts with each other. In spelling, students have been learning about complex spelling patterns, spelling rules, prefixes, and suffixes. They have also been investigating the origin and history of words.
INQUIRY
In Inquiry, we have been learning about changemakers. We looked at the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, and each student picked one of the 17 UN goals they believed to be most important. We brainstormed ideas to help address these goals. For example, gender equality is one of the UN goals, and some students suggested that girls should also play on the oval and basketball court, not just boys. We also planned actions we could take at school to work toward these goals.
MATHS
In Maths, the entire 5/6 cohort has been learning about 3D shapes and their nets. We have been creating cool-looking buildings out of 3D shapes, resulting in a magnificent sight. These lessons have greatly improved our knowledge of 3D shapes and provided us with a fun learning experience. We have also learned the vocabulary of shapes and how to use these terms. Here are some responses from the 5/6s:
S.R.C.
The Student Representative Council has been working to help our 5/6 cohort. We’re focused on making sports more inclusive by offering mixed sports, which allows everyone to join in and have fun together. The S.R.C. keeps us informed about what’s happening at school, helping to strengthen our community by collaborating and supporting one another, we’re creating a friendly and welcoming environment for all students.
