R/Deputy Principal's Message

"We all have mental health. It is never too early to start learning how to look after it" - Grow Your Mind Podcast

Mental Health Month

Maintaining good mental health is crucial for students as it directly impacts their ability to learn, engage, and thrive in the school environment. Positive mental health fosters resilience, enhances academic performance, and promotes healthy relationships among peers. It is essential for students to develop coping strategies and seek support when needed, as this not only aids in their personal growth but also contributes to a positive school culture. This month is Mental Health Month in Australia and like many aspects of a young person's development schools, families and communities working in partnership is essential. By prioritising mental wellbeing, we empower our students to navigate challenges effectively and build a brighter future.

At Ben Venue Public School, we have a range of supports and programs to help build resilience and positive coping strategies. In the classroom, teachers use the PAX good behaviour game and the Berry Street Educational Model to support inclusion, and connection and to explicitly teach positive behaviours.  Both of these programs are affirmed by a strong evidence base. In our mandated curriculum, teachers also deliver a range of programs within the Personal Development and Health key learning area. Students and parents should always look to connect with their classroom teacher should they have any concerns.

In terms of supporting young people at home, I can recommend the Grow Your Mind podcast, which I have listened to with my own children. Four seasons deep, this series is specifically targeted at primary school-aged children and their parents. The episodes can be listened to together (maybe while driving around to afternoon activities) and provide a great launch pad for discussion about this important topic. Episodes can be accessed via all the usual platforms but here is a link to the website to help you get started.
