Borrowing and Student Voice
Reading continues to grow in popularity at Wyndham Central College, with students frequently borrowing books and discovering the joy it brings. To support their enthusiasm, we’re actively growing our library collection with a focus on what interests them most. Manga, a favourite among many, is regularly updated with new titles. One exciting recent arrival is the Dinosaur Sanctuary series, which has already sparked interest among readers.
Penguin books describes Dinosaur Sanctuary as “A richly detailed manga about a rookie zookeeper learning how to care for dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes, sure to delight dinosaur lovers!
Dinosaurs are alive! In 1946, a remote island was discovered where dinosaurs never went extinct. Through breeding and genetic manipulation, dinosaur populations increased, and dino-mania reached a fever pitch worldwide...until a certain terrible incident occurred. Afterward, dinosaur reserves like Enoshima Dinoland fell on hard times. Enter Suma Suzume, a kind-hearted rookie dino-keeper! Can she be the one to save Dinoland from extinction?”
Student voice matters to us, and we love hearing your ideas! Drop by the LRC and let us know what genres, topics, or titles you'd like added to the collection — your suggestions help shape our library.

Meet Nicole 😊
Nicole loves reading and regularly visits the library to borrow books. Recently, she discovered something exciting — we also have a special collection of books that students can take home and keep! That’s right — no need to return them. Nicole is now one of several students building her very own home library, thanks to this fantastic opportunity.
Donations
If you have good quality fiction and non- fiction titles that you no longer need, we would love to hear from you. Please email Lindell.saunders@education.vic.gov.au with a list of titles you wish to donate so that we can ensure they are the right fit for our students.
Please do not send books to school without first checking in with our library staff. Space is limited !
Book Displays
To keep reading fresh and exciting, we regularly update our library displays. This allows us to showcase books around different themes, current events, and school celebrations. Make sure to check in often – there’s always something new to discover!
Recently, we featured a display celebrating the works of Anh Do, one of Australia’s most loved authors. Known for his engaging and often humorous storytelling, Anh Do has written a wide range of books that appeal to readers of all ages – from the adventurous WeirDo and Ninja Kid series to the inspiring memoir The Happiest Refugee. His books continue to be favourites among our students and are a great way to spark a love of reading.
This week, we joined in the celebrations for Multicultural Week, embracing the rich diversity within our school community. The library showcased a range of books that highlight different cultures, voices, and stories from around the world. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore new perspectives and celebrate the many backgrounds that make our school unique.

Reading For Pleasure Program
A reminder……
Informed by current research, Wyndham Central College has launched the Reading for Pleasure initiative — a program designed to foster a lifelong love of reading. Led by Ms Virginia Millard and supported by staff across the school, the program gives students dedicated time to read purely for enjoyment.
Students in Years 7 and 8 have three 15-minute reading sessions each week, while those in Years 9 to 12 enjoy two sessions per week. There are no tests, assignments, or reading levels — just the freedom to choose any book, topic, or pace that suits them. Every tutor room is equipped with its own bookcase, offering a diverse selection of books and reading materials to help students explore, relax, and enjoy the power of reading.
Competition
Entries are closing soon for the “Fabulous, amazing and delightful bookcase competition.” Each tutor room has been provided with a bookcase to highlight their reading materials and commitment to reading. Judging will be based on the following criteria: neatness, location in room, display, creativity and contents. There will be prizes awarded from years 7 to 12.
Magazines
Reading magazines offers our students a fun and engaging way to develop literacy skills while exploring topics they’re passionate about. Whether it’s science, sport, fashion, or current events, magazines provide up-to-date, bite-sized information that encourages regular reading habits. They also support visual literacy through vibrant images and varied layouts, making reading feel less like a chore and more like a choice.
The LRC has a variety of magazines available to students including Vogue, Dirt Action ,Wheels, OYLA ( Science ), Choice, Teen Breath, Time, National Geographic and more.
A Quiet Space
Our school library is always evolving to meet the needs of our students and staff. We endeavour to support students' academic and emotional well-being. Beyond being a haven for reading, we offer a space for focused study, homework completion, and activities like colouring and puzzles. Quiet zones provide students with opportunities to practice self-regulation and mindfulness, helping them return to class calm and ready to learn . By integrating these elements, the library fosters a nurturing environment that enhances learning and personal growth.
To sum up……
Whether you’re looking for a quiet spot to study, a cozy corner to get lost in a great book, or a place to explore new ideas, the library has something for everyone. Our welcoming space is open to all students and staff who want to make the most of what we offer—whether that’s borrowing books, joining in on special events and activities, or simply enjoying a peaceful environment. Everyone is invited to come and discover how the library can be a valuable part of your school day.
Happy reading 😊
