Year 3/4

Book Week

Reader's Workshop - Book Week

For Book Week, our Year 3/4 students have been diving into the work of author Martin Brown and his mentor text Lesser Spotted Animals. They explored how Brown captures his readers through humour, surprising statistics, rhetorical questions, catchy alliteration and rich descriptive language. Along the way, students have also been learning about the key features of information texts, such as topic sentences, supporting details, headings and subheadings which help to organise facts and make reading clear and engaging.

Martin Brown’s book celebrates the unusual “lesser spotted” animals that are not often found in other information texts, but are just as fascinating and important as the more famous species we usually hear about. Inspired by his style, students have been applying these techniques in their own information writing about endangered species. It has been a wonderful way to celebrate Book Week both by studying a creative author and by becoming information writers themselves!

Book Week Comments

"I like Book Week because it gives us the chance to celebrate authors and books from all over the world who create so many different and exciting stories. I dressed up as a skeleton from Funnybones: The Pet Shop. It’s a funny story where the skeletons get sick of their pets and keep swapping them for new ones. In the end, they realise the best pet was their original bony dog all along!" - Hugo

"Everyone went all out and tried their very best to dress up for our Book Week Parade on Friday morning. Some people spent weeks creating their costumes, and they turned out to be very creative! We all had so much fun. I dressed up as Mr McGee, a character created by the author Pamela Allen. I enjoy reading this story because it is short, easy to read, and very descriptive. The author manages to fit so much into it, and the illustrations make it even better!" - Micah

"I dressed up as the Brick Pig from The Three Little Pigs. He is the clever pig who built his house out of strong bricks, which kept him safe from the Big Bad Wolf. It was fun dressing up with my friends Ashleigh the Straw Pig and Isla the Stick Pig. Book Week is all about dressing up as your favourite book character and having a brick as a portable seat during the Book Week Parade!" - Phoebe

"This year was my first year ever winning The Book Week Parade. I dressed up as the Blue Crayon from The Day the Crayons Quit. This was one of our mentor texts this year when we were learning about persuasive writing. I love that it is a picture story book with persuasive letters." - Amelia B
