Year 6

Author Visits

By Annada and Janna

On the 11th of August author, Zanni Louise came to talk to the Year 3-6s. She talked to us about her books, including 'Errol', 'Mum for Sale' and 'Queenie in Seven Moves'. She played two truths and a lie with us which helped us get to know her better. Zanni talked about her journey to becoming an author and what she liked about being an author. Zanni also chose a kid to role play Errol and she was the mum. It was a great experience learning about her and her journey.

Solli Raphael came to talk to the 5s and 6s on the 12th of August. He talked about his journey into poetry and all his books including 'Limelight', 'Spotlight', '29 things you didn't know about me' and his new book 'Starlight'. He drew an Incredible I and made it our mascot, he then read his poem called The Incredible I. Throughout the session he read us various poems. Solli showed us an image and gave us a boring sentence to describe it, our job was to make it more poetic. Overall this was an amazing experience. We learnt so much about Solli and poetry.

Once by Morris Gleitzman

During Book Week our Year 6 students completed their novel study of Once by Morris Gleitzman. While the story explored sad and confronting themes, the students were deeply engaged in learning about history and the powerful lessons within the book. The novel sparked rich discussions in class, particularly about the challenges the characters faced and the resilience they showed in difficult times.

To conclude the unit, students wrote their own book reviews, reflecting on the characters, themes, and their personal responses to the story. Many students shared how much they valued the opportunity to step into another time in history and to develop a deeper understanding of the importance of empathy and compassion.

This book study has not only strengthened students’ reading and writing skills but also inspired meaningful conversations about humanity, kindness, and courage.

Visit from Tim Wilson (MP for Goldstein)

Our Year 5 and 6 students recently had the opportunity to meet Tim Wilson, the local Member of Parliament for Goldstein. Tim visited the school to talk about his role as an MP and to help students better understand how federal parliament works in Australia.

He explained the responsibilities of representing a local community, how laws are made, and the importance of listening to the voices of the people he serves. Students were especially interested to hear about what a typical day looks like for a parliamentarian and asked thoughtful questions about leadership, decision-making, and the role of government in our lives.

The visit was a valuable experience that linked directly to the students’ Civics and Citizenship inquiry topic, giving them real-life insight into how democracy functions in Australia.
