Subject Selection

Year 9 Badano lessons in weeks 1-3 of Term 3 are focussed on subject selection and will be presented by Mr Holt or another Careers staff member when there are multiple Year 9 classes on at the same time.

In their first lesson, students will receive their Subject Selection Handbook.  As students are required to leave the Handbook with Mr Holt until they complete the third lesson, to assist with further research outside of class, students can access an electronic version of the Handbook - go to SIMON and in the search bar type in Knowledge Banks, then go to the Subject Selection folder to locate the relevant Handbook. Parents can also access the electronic version of the Handbook – go to PAM and scroll down until you see Knowledge Banks and then click on the Subject selection link to find the relevant Handbook.

Students need to use the Handbook to help them to make informed decisions on their subjects for next year. An example of the information that can be found in the Year 9 Handbook:

Dance

(This subject can be done by Mainstream or HORIZONS students)

This subject focuses on providing students with the opportunity to study a myriad of different types of dance styles, emphasising the historical, cultural and social aspects of the art form.

Topics Include:

  • Dance Analysis and Theory
  • Choreography and Performance
  • Learning and performing a group dance

In Year 10, Badano teachers and Careers staff have been presenting careers and subject selection lessons during Badano classes for most of Term 2 and now for the first three weeks of Term 3.  Students in Year 10 also have a Subject Selection Handbook (which can also be accessed electronically) which has been used extensively in these lessons and students are required to bring it to careers appointments to assist with subject selection discussions.  Year 10 students will also be scheduled to attend a 10-minute interview with a careers staff member toward the end of the subject selection process.   An example of the information that can be found in the Year 10 Handbook:

VCE Psychology

This subject seeks to describe, explain, understand, and predict human   behaviour and mental processes. It includes many sub-fields of study that explore and seek to better understand how individuals, groups, communities, and societies think, feel and act. Students will explore the complex interactions between thought, emotions, and behaviour.

Possible choice for VCE?           O YES              O NO       O MAYBE

Apart from being well informed, the golden rule for selecting subjects is for students to select subjects that they are good at and which they enjoy.
