Senior Chemistry Students Explore the Power of Spectroscopy at University Workshop

Our Year 12 Chemistry students recently had the exciting opportunity to attend an Advanced Spectroscopy Workshop hosted by the University of Sydney. This hands-on experience allowed students to explore how professional chemists use modern analytical techniques to investigate the structure and composition of organic compounds.

The students engaged in practical activities and live demonstrations, gaining valuable insights into the application of proton and carbon-13 NMRinfrared (IR) spectroscopyUV-visible spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. These techniques are essential for both qualitative and quantitative analysis in the field of chemistry.

Students also participated in inquiry-based investigations to identify the presence of key functional groups in organic molecules, including:

  • Carbon–carbon double bonds
  • Hydroxyl groups
  • Carboxylic acids

By working through real spectra and analysing the data, students were able to connect their theoretical classroom knowledge with real-world scientific practice. This workshop not only enhanced their understanding of the HSC Chemistry syllabus content but also sparked further interest in careers in analytical and organic chemistry.

We are proud of our students' enthusiasm and professionalism during this valuable learning experience and thank the University of Sydney for hosting such an inspiring and educational event.

🔬 Science Week 2025 at Evans High School

From Monday, 11 August to Friday, 15 August, Evans High School proudly celebrated National Science Week 2025, aligned with this year’s theme: “Decoding the Universe: Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language.” 🌌✨

The week was filled with engaging activities that brought science to life for our students:

  • Monday & Tuesday: Both the IEC Science Faculty and the mainstream Science Faculty ran lunchtime and recess demonstrations and hands-on activities in the Science Labs. Students were fascinated by the exciting experiments and interactive displays.

  • Thursday: We hosted the spectacular Fizzics Education Science Show, where students were treated to explosive and thrilling demonstrations that highlighted the wonder of science in action.

  • Friday: The week wrapped up with Mad Scientist Dress-Up Day 👩‍🔬🧑‍🔬. Students and staff joined in the fun, and a photo booth was available during recess for everyone to capture their wacky science outfits.

👏 A special thank you goes to both the mainstream and IEC Science Faculties for their dedication to organising such a memorable celebration, and to all our students for their enthusiastic participation. Science Week 2025 was truly an inspiring event that highlighted the power of curiosity, discovery, and creativity. 🚀⚡
