Careers in Term 3
This term has been an exciting one for our students, with plenty of opportunities to explore future pathways and gain real insight into the world of work and further study. Our Year 10 students continued with their fortnightly Careers Education lessons, focusing this term on job readiness skills. They explored employability skills, created resumes, worked on job applications, and practiced mock interviews. These sessions have helped build both confidence and practical knowledge as students prepare for senior school and future opportunities.
Twenty-three students participated in the Start Your Future program, attending TAFE one day each week to try out industries ranging from automotive mechanical, barbering, plumbing, and bakery skills to graphic and interior design, fashion, nursing, and café operations. These courses gave students hands-on experience and a genuine taste of what these careers involve, while also connecting them with peers from other schools.
I also had the privilege of meeting one-on-one with our Year 12 students as they prepare for life after school. These interviews provided a valuable opportunity to hear about their aspirations and provide guidance on career options, relevant pathways, university applications and UAC, as well as apprenticeships and vocational opportunities. It has been rewarding to support them as they clarify their goals and plan their next steps. I wish all of our Year 12 students the very best as they approach their HSC and prepare to finish school.
Our Year 8 classes, 8N and 8V, participated in a hands-on workshop facilitated by JobQuest. Across the two-hour session, students were introduced to career learning and explored a wide range of pathways through interactive, group-based activities. It was a fantastic way for them to start thinking about their future in a fun and engaging way.
Year 9 enjoyed two major experiences this term. As part of the Fast Forward program at Western Sydney University, they participated in experiential learning designed to build collaboration and problem-solving skills, while also fostering confidence in seeing tertiary study as a realistic and achievable pathway. Another group of Year 9 students visited Meadowbank TAFE, where they took part in a campus tour and rotated through three industry workshops of their choice. Options included real estate, beauty, business, sport and recreation, trades, health, hair, aged care and disability, and accounting. This gave students valuable insight into potential career pathways while becoming familiar with the TAFE environment.
A group of students from the Year 10 Timber class also had the opportunity to attend a Trade Readiness workshop, where they took part in construction-focused activities such as a worksite induction, working at heights with harness awareness, and practical sessions using a laser level and compaction tools. The workshop gave the students a valuable taster of the construction industry and the chance to experience firsthand the skills and safety expectations involved in the trades.
It has been great to see so many students engaging with the Careers News page on Google Classroom to stay up to date with opportunities, programs, and events. I encourage all students to continue checking regularly and following up on opportunities that interest them, as this is the best way to stay informed and make the most of what’s available. I also encourage our current Year 9 students, who will be commencing Year 10 in Term 4, to join the page: Evans High School Careers Updates 2025 with the code bpo5uzz.
