Grade 1

Explore the Learning in Grade 1

English

The Grade 1s will begin a new Core Knowledge unit, ‘Astronomy.’ To complement this, they will also be exploring the text, 'How to Catch a Star,' by Oliver Jeffers.

Students will explore questions such as:

  • Where are the sun, moon and stars located?
  • How does Earth's movement cause day, night, sunrise and sunset?
  • What are shooting stars?

In Syntax and Grammar, students will be extending sentences that contain an adverb. They will also be taught vocabulary words, including 'gas, horizon, dusk and celestial bodies.'

Mathematics

Students will be learning about using the split strategy to solve subtraction problems, mass, statistics and creating equal groups using arrays.

Inquiry

This term, we will also be focusing on the history of Barwon Heads as we celebrate 150 years of Barwon Heads Primary School. In Weeks 5 and 6, the students will be learning about the Bollards in Barwon Heads.  This will help prepare the students to create their own Bollard. They will also be learning about toys and games that children used in the 70s

and compare them with the toys and games that they play with today.

Key Dates & Reminders

Bringing Toys to School

We have recently had a number of students bringing toys and accessories to school. This can result in students losing precious items from home or being involved in 'swapping' or giving items to friends, which can become upsetting. We strongly discourage students from bringing personal items to school to avoid these situations.
