Explore the Learning in Prep

English

The Preps will continue their Core Knowledge unit, ‘Exploring and Moving to Australia.’ The students will continue to practice expanding sentences using the sentence stems

 'because' and 'but.'

Students will explore questions such as:

  • What helped form both Wave Rock and the Umpherston Sinkhole?
  • What is a constructed landmark?
  • What is the capital city of Australia?
  • Why are Kakadu Park and Uluru sacred sites to Aboriginal people?

The Preps will continue to learn the taught sounds in Set 9 including the spelling rule that ‘ff’, 'll', 'ss' and 'zz' are used after /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/ and /u/. The Preps will continue to learn the new high frequency words: little, one, do, does, down, here.

Mathematics

Students will be introduced to subtraction and practice solving subtraction problems by using the strategy of taking away. The students will also learn about data displays and statistics and sort concrete materials into groups by attributes of colour or shape.

Inquiry

The students will work on their Little Explorers notebook and locate areas such as Canberra, Sydney, the Nullarbor and the Umpherston sink hole on a map of Australia. They will also draw landmarks that they learned about this week, such as the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Parliament House.

This term, we will also be focusing on the history of Barwon Heads as we celebrate 150 years of Barwon Heads Primary School. In Weeks 5 and 6, the students will be learning about the Bollards in Barwon Heads. In Week 5, we will go on an excursion where the Prep students will follow the route of the Bollards and observe the different designs of the Bollards. This will help prepare the students to create their own Bollard.

Key Dates & Reminders

Bringing Toys to School

We have recently had a number of students bringing toys and accessories to school. This can result in students losing precious items from home or being involved in 'swapping' or giving items to friends, which can become upsetting. We strongly discourage students from bringing personal items to school to avoid these situations.
