Lunar New Year

Student Reflection
On Thursday 6 February, Oxley hosted a vibrant Lunar New Year lunch for all international students in the Dining Room, celebrating the Year of the Snake. The lunch was open to all international students, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere where everyone could feel at home. Volunteer cooks made the event special by preparing a spread of traditional dumplings, chicken and Chinese sausage rice, fruits, and a selection of drinks. Each bite was a taste of home, making it a comforting experience for those who couldn’t be with their families to celebrate the holiday.
The decorations were equally impressive, with vibrant plum blossoms and lanterns, adding a festive touch to the Dining Room. As part of the celebration, students were given little red envelopes, each containing chocolate gold coins, symbolising blessings and wealth in the coming year. Alongside these, beautifully crafted customised place cards for each person added a personal touch that made the event even more special and memorable.
Reflecting on the experience, it was truly heartwarming. Being away from home for the Lunar New Year can be tough, especially when you’re far from family and familiar traditions. However, this event made me feel like I was back home, surrounded by those who shared the joy and meaning of the celebration. It was a comforting reminder that Oxley is not just a school—it is a place where I can belong, no matter where I am from.
Overall, the Lunar New Year lunch was a beautiful occasion that brought together food, culture, and community in a way that made us feel connected. I am grateful for such a thoughtful and meaningful celebration, one that made me feel truly at home in Australia.
