Year Six

Dear Year 6 Families,

Welcome to Year 6! We are very excited to begin the year with our students and to partner with you as they embark on their final year of primary school. Year 6 is a significant and memorable time, filled with opportunities for leadership, growth, independence and celebration.

Over the past week, we have been working closely together across our Year 6 classrooms to support a smooth and positive start to the year. Teachers have spent time getting to know students as individuals, building strong relationships, and establishing consistent expectations across the cohort. Through collaborative activities, class discussions and shared routines, students have been encouraged to develop a sense of belonging, trust and teamwork. This collective approach helps ensure all students feel supported, confident and ready to learn as part of the Year 6 community.

Throughout the year, students will be encouraged to take increasing responsibility for their learning, develop strong organisational skills, and demonstrate the values and expectations of senior primary students. We place a strong emphasis on wellbeing, respectful relationships and building a supportive classroom community where every child feels safe, valued and challenged.

This term, learning across all curriculum areas will focus on establishing strong routines and setting high expectations.

Reading

In Reading, students focused on establishing strong independent reading routines. They worked together to organise and categorise our classroom library, learning why a well-maintained library supports successful reading habits. Students explored what makes a “Just Right” book, practising how to choose texts that are engaging while still providing appropriate challenge. They also began using reading response books, learning how to log their reading, reflect on text difficulty, and respond thoughtfully to what they read. Students were introduced to the reading instructional model, helping them understand how reading lessons are structured and how each part supports their growth as readers.

Writing

In Writing, students launched their Writer’s Notebooks, learning how these act as a personal space to collect ideas, observations and inspiration throughout the year. They practised quick writes to build writing stamina and focus, including a reflective Letter to My Future Self. Students also began developing writing “seeds” through the task The Best Part of Me, using words and images to plan ideas before drafting. A strong emphasis was placed on understanding the writing process (planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing) and building confidence to write for sustained periods of time.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, the focus was on establishing maths routines, expectations and learning behaviours. Students explored what a successful maths lesson looks like, sounds like and feels like, linking this to learner profile attributes and collaboration. Learning activities introduced key number concepts including factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers, with students using concrete materials, diagrams and explanations to show their thinking. Students also learnt how to organise their maths work clearly in their workbooks, understanding how neat layout supports accurate reasoning and problem solving.
