Year Three

Dear Year Three Parents and Carers,
Welcome to the 2026 school year. It has been wonderful to see our Year Three students return with such enthusiasm and positivity. Over the first weeks of Term One, students have settled confidently into their new classes, forming connections with peers and teachers and re-establishing routines. We are incredibly proud of the way they have approached the start of the year and look forward to the growth and achievements ahead for our Year Three cohort.
The Year Three Team – 2026
As our school community continues to grow, we are fortunate to welcome a mix of returning and new staff to the Year Three team this year. Our teachers have worked closely together to ensure a smooth transition for students and to establish consistent expectations across the year level.
The Year Three teaching team is supported by strong collaborative structures, with teachers working in pod partnerships to plan, assess and respond to student learning. We are confident that students are well supported both academically and socially as they move through the year.

The First 20 Days of Learning
All Year Three classes are currently engaging in our First 20 Days of Learning program. This program is designed to support students as they transition into a new year level by explicitly teaching routines, expectations and learning behaviours that support success.
Through this program, students are developing independence, positive learning habits and respectful behaviours, while also strengthening their relationships with classmates and teachers. The First 20 Days sets a strong foundation for learning and wellbeing and prepares students for success across all areas of the curriculum.
Building Class Essential Agreements
A key focus during the first weeks of school has been developing a shared understanding of Class Essential Agreements. Students have worked hard to explore not only what these agreements are, but why they matter.
Through discussion, reflection and collaborative activities, students have learned how their actions and choices contribute to creating a classroom environment where everyone feels cared for, valued and supported to thrive. This work supports our whole-school wellbeing approach and empowers students to take ownership of their learning environment, relationships and behaviour.
Reading
In Reading, students have been developing an understanding of the structure and expectations of a reading lesson. They have engaged with a wide range of texts and explored different genres, learning how to identify key features of both fiction and non-fiction texts.
A strong focus in Year Three is comprehension. Over the next few weeks students will continue to build strategies to help them think deeply about texts, including answering literal and inferential questions. As we move closer to NAPLAN, students will be introduced to strategies such as QAR (Question Answer Relationship) to support their understanding and confidence.
We strongly encourage families to support reading at home by ensuring students read regularly and discuss texts together.
Writing
Writing remains a key focus in Year Three. Students have begun the year by learning about the structure of writing lessons and developing positive writing habits. The introduction of the Writer’s Notebook has provided students with a space to record ideas, experiences and inspiration for future writing.
Students are learning how to generate and develop ideas, often referred to as “seeds”, which they will use to plan and create extended pieces of writing. Throughout the year, students will move through the full writing process: planning, drafting, revising, editing and publishing, across a range of genres, including Narrative and Persuasive writing.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students are engaging in lessons using an explicit workshop model. Early learning has focused on building strong number foundations, including ordering numbers, skip counting, identifying odd and even numbers, and solving worded problems using structured problem-solving approaches.
These concepts will support students as they progress into additive and multiplicative thinking later in the term. A focus on multiple exposures allows students to revisit concepts using different materials and representations, strengthening understanding and confidence.
General Information
We encourage families to communicate directly with their child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns, as they are the first point of contact. Working together in a positive and solution-focused way helps us achieve the best outcomes for students.
Year Three Parent Meet and Greet Evenings
We are excited to invite Year Three parents and guardians to our Meet the Teacher evening. A formal email will be sent out by tomorrow Friday 6th.
This will be a great opportunity to meet your child’s 2026 teacher, share important information about your child, and discuss how we can work together to support their learning and help them achieve their goals.
