STEAM in Term One at Hampton Primary School
Exploring Technology, Creativity and Collaboration
Term One 2025 has been an exciting and innovative time in the STEAM program at Hampton Primary School. Across all year levels, students have engaged in hands-on learning experiences that celebrate creativity, curiosity and problem-solving — all while building their skills in Digital Technologies, in line with the Victorian Curriculum.
This term, students explored a wide range of digital tools and concepts through engaging, age-appropriate challenges. Foundation students were introduced to iPads and the basics of digital photography, while Year 1 and 2 students further developed their photography and organisational skills using native iOS apps such as Camera, Photos and Files. They practised using zoom, the grid function, editing tools and album creation to organise their work effectively.
Students in the middle and upper years built on these skills through multimedia projects, collaborating to develop digital collages, photo storyboards and short videos that demonstrated STEAM room behaviour expectations and eSmart rules. These projects are being shared with the junior school community via QR codes linked to a restricted-access YouTube channel, helping younger students learn from older role models in a safe, engaging way. Our Grade 6 students took things a step further, beginning the process of designing their own apps using wire-framing techniques to plan their layout, purpose and user experience.
iPads have been used in meaningful and creative ways across the school — as cameras, editing platforms, coding environments and design tools. This purposeful integration of iPads into the STEAM program has not only enhanced student learning but has empowered them to become confident digital creators rather than passive users.
Importantly, all students have demonstrated a strong commitment to safe and respectful digital behaviour by actively modelling the Hampton Primary School eSmart Agreement. Whether working independently or in teams, students consistently showed care for their devices, kindness in their communication and responsibility in their online choices. These positive behaviours support our school’s values and help build a culture where students can thrive in a safe digital environment.
The STEAM program continues to be a vibrant and valued part of learning at Hampton, providing students with real-world opportunities to think critically, collaborate with others and develop important digital capabilities. We are proud of the way our students have embraced new challenges, supported one another, and used technology in positive and purposeful ways throughout Term One.
We look forward to continuing our STEAM adventures in Term Two!
