Preschool Grey Investigates Life Cycles and the Natural World
In Preschool Grey our exploration of the natural environment has taken us on a remarkable journey this term as part of our Reggio Emilia-inspired project work on ‘Transformation.’ Through hands-on experiences, our preschool children have been deeply engaged in understanding the incredible transformations that occur in nature, as we focus on the fascinating life cycles of bees and frogs.
Our exploration began with the life cycle of the bee and the vital role they play in our ecosystem. The children have been conducting in-depth research into bees and the important job they play in pollination. The children even crafted their very own mini bee hives, using natural materials and a variety of loose parts. This process allowed the children to actively explore the different elements of a bee’s habitat, driven by their new knowledge.
To deepen their understanding of the bee’s adventures, the children devised a clever physical depiction of the bees' journeys to and from the hive. Using loose parts and small wooden and plastic blocks to represent obstacles and flowers, they created a “beeline” trail that mimics the bees’ flight path. This interactive, imaginative play not only fostered creativity but also sparked rich conversations about the bees' hard work and the importance of protecting these vital pollinators. Their curiosity didn’t stop there! The children conducted their own bee research, learning about the stages of a bee’s life from egg to larva to pupa, and finally to adult bee. We explored books, videos, and even invited an expert to share insights with us. This research helped the children better understand the interconnectedness of the natural world and how transformation is a continuous process.
In parallel, the children have also been exploring the life cycle of frogs, observing firsthand the fascinating stages of metamorphosis. We currently have tadpoles in our classroom, which the children are observing closely as they evolve into adult frogs. Our exploration of frogs took an exciting turn when the children learned about the Australian Corroboree Frog, an endangered species. After discussing the threats this frog faces, including habitat destruction and disease, the children wanted to take direct action and are currently exploring how they can protect this beautiful creature.
We are incredibly proud of our children’s commitment to preserving the natural world and look forward to sharing more discoveries with you in the coming weeks!
